Savage Voyageur: "If at the time you we issued a permit there was no burning ban then during your trip you can have a fire. On your permit it will clearly state if there is a burning ban. But if a ranger came by and told you now there is a burning ban then you now have been told not have any more fires. "

thank you for your explanation

If a ranger marks your permit in the middle of the trip then yeah you switch to cold meals. For me all my stuff outside of the fish fry can be eaten cold so it doesn't really affect me outside of not having a fire at night.

My understanding is rangers could come by and mark your permit and during a fire ban a stove must have a shut off valve, which eliminates twig stoves and alcohol stoves. It's a reason I don't bring my alcohol stove or have a twig stove.

If my canoe floats away or the only paddle breaks, or the only map got blown off by the wind, or a bear steps on my glasses... The rule would be: be prepared or go back to civilization. If in the fire ban scenario I bring my gas stove instead of the twig stove - what happens if the gas stove malfunctions? There's no way to make a fire without a fire, but may be it's possible to enjoy cold water cooking. Or may be a spare stove will help.

Yep, if you have no backup then it is eat what you can without cooking. I’m guessing in our food that would be lunches, snacks, and dehydrated dinners minus the pasta, rice, or quinoa. I would probably try soaking those all day in the sun. Maybe a sun shower would help get the water warm enough to help a bit.

I have an MSR Pocket Rocket as well but to be honest if I had to bring that as a backup then I would just leave the twig stove at home. I was just putting it out there out of curiosity in the event that you didn't have a "backup".

If I recall correctly, if rangers inform you of a ban they will note it on your permit. It’s also possible other campers who have just come in or heard from rangers may tell you. If there is a ban, you should comply even if rangers have not marked it on your permit.

I love my Solo twig stove too, but it does not meet the burn ban requirements. It’s best to have a compliant stove back up. An MSR Pocket Rocket and small cartridge is light and cheap option. Otherwise, as mentioned, just have food that do not need cooking or are ok with soaking.

Burn bans rarely pop up as a surprise. It’s pretty easy to see or find out when it’s dry and there’s no rain in the forecast.

One burner fuel stoves are typically allowed in all but the most stringent fire bans so I would look into the purchase of a cheap stove and fuel tank if you are worried about it.

I have a twig stove and it is fun to use, typically use it a couple times on a trip just for fun. I could survive on it easily but they are not allowed during most fire bans whereas butane powered stoves often are.

Consider picking up a cheap one burner stove as opposed to eating cold food for days. I would recommend one but it is currently unavailable but you can get decent ones for 20- 30 bucks.

If I ran into a ranger. I'm assuming he/she would tell me if they saw it wasn't written on my permit.

This may be a stupid question, but how would you know if a burn ban was put in place? Even if I had a radio or cell service, I wouldn't be using either.

I usually cook with a twig stove and was just curious what your options were if a burn ban was enacted mid-trip. Leave and only eat what you could without cooking it?
