Left Sunday lake today and was met by Rangers sweeping Beartrap lake and told to exit.

IMPO, (In My Professional Opinion) if Ontario does not put the fires out (and we continue to have dry weather) that are near the international border by Crooked Lake, it is only a matter of time before they jump the water and burn in the BWCA.
The three closest Canadian fires will most likely join into two or even one fire before/if that happens. The area between Sunday and Thursday Bay would be my guess because it is necked down there, but spotting 1-2 miles is very possible with these drought indexes and could happen anywhere.

Our Mudro permit is for August 1st. It is my understanding that the closure begins July 17th and will remain in effect for rolling 7-day periods as conditions warrant. As such, all Mudro permits from the 17th-23rd are already cancelled. I also assume that an announcement will be made at some point about the 24th-30th, then the 31st-Aug 5th, etc. I'm hoping that these announcements can be made early on, rather than day of, as it's a group trip with members traveling from multiple areas and a number of other moving parts. There are no other permits available in the entire Wilderness for our date except Trout Lake and Lac La Croix Only from Crane Lake... not what I'd label as top-choice wilderness canoe experiences. I don’t want to cancel this trip, but we may possibly not be the ones making that choice. Let’s hope and pray that those advancing Quetico wildfires can be contained in time.

Although, with everyone being evicted from Crooked and Iron, etc, I can only imagine a permanent 'No Vacancy' sign on Horse and Fourtown...

That's very unfortunate.

"The Forest will be canceling some quota permit reservations for Mudro Entry Point (#22/#23), which feeds visitors into the Crooked and Iron Lake areas. Those with reservations will be contacted, reimbursed and redirected to other areas of the Forest that do not require BWCAW quota permits to ensure they still have the opportunity to experience the Forest and its remote lakes in a safe manner."

This is a really big deal. I don't know if it will be studied, but I am very interested in how those with Mudro permits will adapt, and how the remainder of the BWCA will be impacted. With the high percentage of permits taken for the entire BWCA, I wonder how many with Mudro permits will enter other EPs without a permit.

We were lucky enough to find a Saturday permit for fall lake this morning.Otherwise yeah, our trip and all of our preparation would’ve been for naught. My son and his college buddy we’re driving up from Chicago tonight.

For campers, I'm assuming.

"The Forest is announcing closures in the BWCAW in the Iron Lake and Crooked Lake area due to wildfires in Canada and the travel times required to move BWCAW visitors if the fires spread into the US. The Closure Order is effective on July 17, 2021 and includes:
??Crooked and Iron Lakes
??Mudro Entry Point (EP#22 and 23)
??Pristine Management Areas (PMA) of Sundial, Zones 1, 2 and 5, and all of the Tick PMA ??Campsites on Wagosh, Niki and Chippewa Lakes

This Closure Order will remain in place for seven days or until conditions become safe for BWCAW travel. Wilderness rangers will initiate contact with visitors on Crooked Lake beginning Friday, July 16, 2021, and instruct them to move out of the adjacent area to safer zones. Those with reservations for the Mudro Entry Point (#22 and 23) will be contacted and redirected to other recreational areas of the Forest that do not require BWCAW quota permits to ensure they still have the opportunity to experience the Forest and its remote lakes safely."

Yup. Just officially announced Mudro closing. Crooked, Iron and other lakes closed too. Rangers will be in to let people know to move off the lakes to safer zones.

Sweeping it to get people out of there.

This is bad news. I wonder if you had a Mudro Permit, are you just out of luck?"

You are out of luck, unless you can find another permit that is available.

Several other fires in that link.

I feel for the people that have Mudro entry points. I've entered there many times and I know it's not a spur of the moment entry.
Zulu 07/15/2021 05:41PM
pswith5: ""Sweeping" it for what?" They will probably motor boat in and close campsites and tell people about closure and their options to head out a different way or head for Mudro immediately. That’s what happened to me on Lake Four during The Pagami Creek Fire. A Helicopter flew around taking an inventory of groups and those people where contacted later that day by USFS in small motorboats. I was listed on the inventory sheet as “Single man with dog. Yellow canoe. Green packs”.

People who will need to get the hell out of Dodge. This sweeping is what ultimately put six rangers at risk during the Pagami fire.

This news is bad. Hope Firefighters stay safe.

Will that include day use as well?

Interested to hear what the issue is. That's a large section to close.
airmorse 07/15/2021 04:37PM
Is this due to Canadian Fires.

Just got back from a cooperators meeting with the USFS and the Type 2 incident command Team. As of Saturday (proposed) the Mudro entry point and all travel along crooked lake will be prohibited. This will include Iron Lake as well. They plan on sweeping the area on Saturday.
