Quebec Province is in lockdown again. So is the Netherlands. It does seem few deaths from Omicron but it is using hospital resources. There is less support for lockdowns currently. Who knows about next variant.

Fortunately, soft water season is still nearly six months away. Although there are exceptions, governments seem more hesitant to enforce the same types of lockdowns as they did in the first 12-18 months of the pandemic. Omicron looks to cause milder disease. For all of our paddling sakes, hopefully the US and Canada will continue to allow people to visit. That said, I'm planning on my first northern entry in 2022 since who knows when the RABC program might get back up and running.

billconner: "Well, you could drive to Atikokan and pick up vehicle permits for day use. My understanding is you can date as you like. Would allow more than just border lakes and not much competition. "

You used to be able to order the vehicle permit online as well. Forgot about that.

They opened that up a long time ago like August or September. I was up at Lake of the Woods wheelers point area doing some work On my buddy’s cabin. Grabbed a late supper and ran into two guys that had run up near Big Island Morson area by water. They were fall fishing musky. I’ve walleye fished over the years all up in the Canadian side as well.

Like you said it doesn’t help from a Quetico trip standpoint since you have to touch land!
thegildedgopher 12/07/2021 09:54PM
Yeah, I'm going to let others figure this out on Basswood etc or other lakes that require Quetico permits. But for the eastern half of Saganaga as well as Gunflint, North, etc., it opens up the Canadian side to me on day trips. Ontario outdoors card & fishing license, follow live bait rules, no booze in boat, report our return back across the US border via the CBP Roam App. That should cover the bases.

The only issue I see is if you fish the Quetico side. You have always been required to have a Quetico permit to cross the border. Even if it is just by water. I’d call or email the superintendent to verify. Then keep a copy of that communication on you. You may not need an RABC but you will need an Ontario fishing license, no live bait, no barbs, and a Quetico permit…and not get caught by a Canadian MNR official who doesn’t decide to just fine you anyway…

It’s a step in the right direction, but I am still skeptical if ya can tell :)

I've read through the park plan and I cannot find any indication that quotas will be reduced for the southern entry stations.

That would sure be a shame. I hope they would come up with some way for US
citizens to legally fish the Canadian side of our border lakes at least. RABC has been our only way to do this. We’re not even setting foot on Canadian soil, just want to be able to fish Canadian side of basswood, saganaga, gunflint, north, etc. :(

Use this link for RABC updates. As others have said, I would not plan on obtaining an RABC for quite some time.

flaxman: " It will definitely be simpler if/when they lift the testing requirement."

I worry that could be years. Not trying to be a pessimist, just realistic. I suspect the few US citizens disadvantaged are not much of a priority for Canada. Not is Question PP's income quite up there.
flaxman 11/07/2021 10:08AM
Agree that the rabc program seems incompatible with current entry requirements. My hope is that they keep the rabc program, but find a way to adjust the requirements. Maybe require proof of vaccination to get the permit and a test upload to the Canada entry website. It will definitely be simpler if/when they lift the testing requirement.

billconner: "Pretty sure there will not any RABCs until the vaccine and test within 72 hours goes away. How/who would check that when you cross?"

Agreed

My pessimistic mind leans to the idea that there will be no RABC permit next year. What this means for the Prairie Portage and Cache Lake entry points I don't know, but it means I am planning my trips for Beaverhouse or Atikokan entry points.
plander 11/06/2021 12:19PM
It’s definitely a bummer... and no there hasn’t been any communication from the authorities on when they will start accepting applications again.

In the grand scheme of things I’m guessing starting up the RABC permit process is a low priority for the CBSA.

Below is the link that I use to monitor the most current status. In the past it has taken about 4 weeks after mailing the application for me to receive the permit in the mail.

Any idea when the offices will open to get permits for July 2022 trip into Quetico from USA...Gunflint trail. I know we need passports, proof of vaccine. Not sure about recent negative test within 48 or 72 hours.
