SoMpls: "Thanks for the advice. I figured I could try to call the forest service if anyone agreed but it sounds like it might be more hassle than it's worth. I've been on fourtown and it is a great lake. The motivation for Horse was a to get to a base camp that is close enough for a day trip to LBF without killing them day 1. "

Stinks what happened but, in my opinion, you're in the best area the BWCA has to offer. So many options still! Getting from the parking lot of 22/23 to LBF might look like a long ways but it is preeetttyy easy going. All portages are short, all but one are flat. You can scoot through a couple of the portages on Horse river with normal water levels in the spring. Last year as I was coming out I ended up portaging alongside grandpa, grandma, and their two middle school aged grandkids. I'd bet they were well into their 70s. They said they spent the weekend camping right at LBF. Very, very nice family but if they can do it in a day... so can you and your first timers.

Is fishing your number 1 priority? If it is, I would be base camping somewhere between portage falls and the pictos under LBF. Lots of good fishing in there, especially that time of the year. Still gives you the opportunity to day trip to Horse if your group is willing to travel for it. You'll learn quickly that the fishing up and down the Basswood river is good enough to where you wouldnt need to go back to Horse if you didnt want. If you're dead set on fishing mostly Horse but want to just day trip to see the falls/pictos for an afternoon I think I'd be camping on the east side of Fourtown like others mentioned.

I'll be headed in 5/25. Maybe see you on your way out!

I’m taking a group of 1st timers to canoe tripping in August through Mudro. Trip was supposed to happen last year but the fire closure ended it for us. Plenty of hard chargers who want to get deep into Crooked to then fish for a bunch of days make it all the way up in one day. It’s possible but a long day and they are focused on the suffering for specific goals. My buddies pretty much said they aren’t looking for a death march on the trip.

I’m planning since I don’t have the limitation with my permit on Horse Lake first night. Then head up if River water level allows and camp up around Lower Basswood and maybe a night just past table Rock on Crooked where it turns west.

If the Horse River is going to be a problem we’ll head into Fourtown and then up Boot, Gun, Gull, Beartrap. Be a great trip where they learn a lot and have lots of fun no matter which way we go.

You could do Fourtown first night. Then into Horse Lake up and up the River on day 2. I’d recommend getting an account and frequently check to see if a Mudro without the limitation opens up. Probably won’t but people do cancel permits every year. It’s been stated already but you can’t trade permits. It has to be cancelled and you have to see it at the right time and snatch it up if the opportunity ever happens.

Starting from Fourtown would add just over an hour each way according to the site that shall not be named, assuming we are able to get one of the campsites near the portage to Horse. It puts the total travel time at 6.5 hours to LBF and 7 hr 45 m to the pictos, round trip. Add the time we spend there and it just seems like a long day. I don't want to burn out first timers. But if anyone has done it and thinks it'd be doable I'd love to hear about it.

Fourtown is a short portage away from Horse right? Depending on where you camp...it would be maybe a half hour difference? For a day trip when you're not loaded down

The lakes to the west and north of Fourtown are really nice. I would suggest Gun Lake for a great basecamp, or if you could get the peninsula site on Gull you would love it but that's a it further. Fairy is a really nice little lake with one good campsite and one really cool one if you don't mind the size of the lake. Nothing wrong with Boot either, good walleye fishing.

All is not lost, would be a good trip although maybe a little more work to get there if you go past Boot.

Why not keep your permit and hang out on Basswood or Fourtown or.....

You can't swap with people as your name is on it and theirs on theirs. You can both cancel but then as mentioned it's not immediate that it opens back up in the system again.

How would you swap? You can't just change the trip leader on your permit. Even if you both agree to surrender your permits, there's no rhyme or reason to when they appear back in the system and become available to book again.

I am bringing a group of new paddlers for a trip entering 5/20 and we had settled on a Horse Lake Basecamp trip. I made the critical error of not being logged into recreation.gov when I tried to book our permit this morning and by 9:01 when I was logged in, the 5 Mudro permits were gone for 5/20.

I grabbed a Mudro Lake (restricted) permit instead, which is the same except no camping on Horse Lake is allowed. If anyone has a standard Mudro permit that isn't planning to camp on Horse Lake anyways and would be willing to swap I would be immensely grateful. Probably a long shot but figured it would be worth asking here.
