Probably suckers not trout."

I was surprised to see them there between Fourtown and Mudro, but they certainly looked and acted like trout. I will admit, however, that I don't have any experience observing suckers in a stream setting like that."

Those were probably Red Horse Suckers. This is the time they spawn. "

Thanks for clarifying, guys.

"You mind sharing which FB account posted this? I'm looking for updates without bothering my outfitter too much. My entry into Mudro is next Wednesday. Plan was going up through Horse but maybe I'll get to Crooked through Gun/Boot."

Just took out from the same trip today. Mudro entry is perfect and an easy paddle right now. We took the horse river and had to do some bushwacking a couple of places because of high water, otherwise it was fine. Came back out through gun/boot which was also fine. Some wet/muddy portages both ways, but nothing outside of what I would expect in May. Wasn't planning on coming out that way, but we were not interested in going back up the horse river with it raging like it was.

Road reopened quickly but portages could be completely under water. Video on FB showed portage toward Fourtown was one with the creek... deep and rushing strongly.

Thanks Schweady. We are planning to head east and north into Horse. The Horse river should be interesting to say the least.

The road was fine last weekend.

Which "Pond" are you talking about ?
The topo map shows about a half mile portage between

There are two portages between Nels and Picket. The section north of the long portage was dry the last time I was there(most likely from beavers). I was coming from Pickett and did the short portage south to the next section of the river.

That might be possible, but have you been through there lately? The last time I was there, it looked as though the pond had dried up. I didn’t attempt to cross as it looked quite challenging.

HayRiverDrifter: "Hmm, why not let people put in at Nels lake with their Mudro permit?"

That's what I would do. You are still entering the BW from the Mudro Lake Entry.
Nels and Picket lakes are outside the BWCAW.

Hopefully that water finds its way into the lakes and rivers north of Mudro to raise some of the low water from last year.
Jerrad 05/03/2022 10:41AM
Does anyone know how the flooding has affected the ice on mudro?

schweady: "Here's the information USFS-SNF posted on their Facebook page today:

"ROAD CLOSURE: Grassy Creek Road, known as Grassy Lake Road or Forest Road 459, is closed approximately 2.7 miles from the beginning of the road due to flooding and several feet of standing water. Mudro entry points off of the Grassy Creek Road are inaccessible at this time. For BWCAW visitors with Mudro Lake entry point permits reservations will be automatically fully refunded through May 10. Forest Service staff are working on repairing the culverts and will re-open the road once it is passable.

.
Well, that is kind of a mixed blessing. Most folks with 5/1- 5/10 permits will just be SOL because of the ice out--at least the Mudro Permit people will get a refund.
Guest poster 05/03/2022 08:12AM
I talked to fella at Latourells this morning about some other business and he said the road will be open in a week.Hes praying for moose ice out before opener and thinks it will bee good.

I came off a two week rainy Quetico trip in October to find the Mudro road closed due to a culvert blow out. Had to leave the car and canoe behind and make my own way back to the Echo Trail. Picked up car two days later to drive the new road bed home.

Oh my. First time I've seen that type of alert.
At least our Mudro permit isn't until July 31st...
