What options did you find for getting getting a ride to Stanton Bay from French, then paddling back out to French?

How did they compare and how did it work out?

Will they get you to Stanton early in the morning?

Thanks.

Thanks to everyone who commented. Sounds like getting dropped off at Stanton Bay and paddling back to Dawson Trail campground is the answer. When I do my trip, that's the plan I'll take.

Hi,
For what it's worth, I agree with a couple of posters above. To keep the cost down, call Barry at Camp Quetico and they will arrange to pick you up at French Lake and drop you at Stanton Bay. A west-to-east trip on Pickerel is a much better way to exit. At least it is only $100CAD instead of $200.

As mentioned above, that outfitter offers a very reasonable price to stay the first night, which can include dinner and breakfast the next morning so you can get an early start. Camp Quetico is just up the road from Dawson Trail.

And you are correct, non-Ontario residents cannot park overnight at Stanton Bay. Besides, I have heard the road into Stanton can be pretty sketchy, depending on the current state of maintenance on that road.

Thanks.
Rick

Drop your vehicle at French the night before your trip. Get a ride from your outfitters to their place. Most offer free transportation to/from French. Give them a nice tip.

Not OS, but I think your only option for Stanton is an outfitter. Maybe they can group you? So you can share in the cost. I’ve used Canoe Canada Quetico Outfitters and Camp Quetico with satisfaction.

They will pick you up at French and shuttle you to Stanton…or if you call and talk to them or email them they might give you an alternative? I’ve found both really responsive.

Have ya thought about just entering and exiting at French? You are taking a chance on the wind but I think the sites are nice on the eastern end of Pickerel if you get wind bound. You can fish the river towards French if you get wind bound, too, so still some options.

Old salt: "Don’t book round trip. Leave your vehicle at French Lake and just enter at Stanton bay. You can surf your way to French when you exit. Will save a portage at the end and saves the stress of meeting an exit pickup. If you’re early or late, it doesn’t matter. Relax!"
OS... good to see you posting, albeit as a Guest Paddler. Did you forget your login? :)

I like your suggestion about leaving my vehicle at French Lake. What is the best way to get to Stanton Bay from there?

dschult2: "I was planning a spring trip to Quetico this year and had the same thoughts as you. I wanted a Stanton bay entry but didn't want to pay the price as a solo. I didn't get to take the trip because of the late ice out but I did do the research which included talking to the park office. You can get a fairly close entry to Stanton bay by accessing at Nym lake lake but instead of heading to Batchewaung you take the 3 Racer's Portages heading out of the southeast corner of Nym leading to Pickerel. That should get you somewhat close to Stanton Bay. The lady at the park office said they were pretty well used. Just make sure to grab a Pickerel permit."
That will get you into Pickerel in about four hours. Last time I did those portages, I was surprised to be walking in the woods and all of a sudden walking over a logging road. It wasn’t there in 2019, but was there this year. Gillnet is a pretty lake too.

Wow, that's pricey. I know it's a 40 minute (+/-) ride to Stanton Bay from Atikokan and gas in Canada is more expensive than here, but I'll have to think about the $200 or so cost of a round trip.

Thanks to everyone who shared info. Very helpful.

So I’m at Camp Quetico now and just had an amazing 3 course dinner! Good enough I took photos and chef cooked! The lodge we’re staying in is off the charts nice! Service has been amazing and we’ve only been here a few hours!

I just asked him and he said a shuttle one way from here to Stanton Bay or back is $100 each way. Same price for solo or more people.

Camp Quetico is taking 3 of us in and picking 3 up. I’m sure they have a minimum price. You’d probably just need to call and find out. We’re staying with them. Ignition prior and night after and they are feeding us a supper and a breakfast each time. I thought Prices were pretty fair!

It's my understanding that parking a car at the Stanton Bay parking lot with non-Ontario license plates is not allowed. I guess using an outfitter for a drop off and pick-up is suggested.

I just checked the Canoe Canada Outfitters website and the minimum fee (presumably once for the drop off and once for the pick-up) is $120 USD per trip. That's $240 roundtrip for a shuttle whether it's one person or four. Is that right?

If a person were going solo and wanted to enter at Stanton Bay, is that the only option for a drop off/pick-up? Are there any better options?
