Corridor crossings permitted. Echo Trail and Gunflint Trail are in corridors, The Fernberg road is not.

This question about leaving the BWCA and entering another entry point was bought up in the post by JohnGalt on his season long trip.
John was told by the forest service he could leave one unconnected part of the BWCA and portage to another during his trip with out getting a new permit.
If you portaged from Farm Lake though Garden Lake to The Fall Lake entry you would need a new permit because those 2 parts are one connected area. Meaning if you wanted to continue on the same permit you would have to travel back to Lake One and find your way back to Fall Lake. If you just want to get to Fall lake entry to get back to your car you would be ok. The boat launch isn’t in the BWCA but if you want to continue you would need a new permit.
I believe the idea of having to get the permit on the day of or the day before is
Is to control the numbers entering and not exceed the daily quota. It would be easy to say I have a permit for that entry so what the heck if I enter a day late or day early. It keeps us honest!
If I could find that post and could figure out how add a link on my IPad I would.

Clears as mud, right?

i did a long trip a few years back and portaged the road from Hog Creek to Kawishiwi L,, where I re-entered, on 1 permit. My understanding is, that as long as you don't make any stops at businesses, you don't need another permit. My 2 mile walk was on a HOT July day and the deer flies were BAD. Of course, if you use your vehicle for transportation, that would be different.

I'd recommend Sawbill as well. Our last trip was into Perent through Hog Creek.

I agree. But also be prepared if someone gives you an exception over the phone the person you end up working with may not.

afromaniac: "I understand the desire to save a few bucks but it helps with overcrowding if you reserve your space in the permitting system. Might not seem like a big deal but you'd be an extra party camping in a space that they try to limit to a smaller number. A permit is not something that breaks the bank. Also it'd be rare that you'd get in trouble but leaving and re-entering is what it is....

and why not reserve in advance? if you know your dates then you can pick up both permits, can't you? "

Technically, no. You can only pick up your permit on the day OF or the day BEFORE your entry date. If he is in the BW for two or three days on the first permit, then he could not pick up the permit for the second permit without going back to a permitting station.

BigTim: "Luke - correct me if I'm wrong, but are you planning on exiting the BWCA after your 1st permit? If not, you'll not need the 2nd permit. You can go wherever you wish once you enter with your 1st permit. Planning for someone to assist you with resupply may be easier than trying to leave and get a 2nd permit."

The road between 36 and 37 is not within the BWCA, so yes, I would be leaving. And Im not going to portage my canoe the 2 miles between Kawishi and Perent lakes. I dont really need a resupply, I will have enough rations either with me or in the car as well as spare stove fuel for way longer than I will be out.

The earliest you can pick up a permit is the day before. Echo advice to use Sawbill Outfitters for permit pick up.
RedLakePaddler 11/30/2022 08:41AM
You could get your permits from Sawbill outfitters. It would still take you an hour one way but that’s a lot better than 2 hours back to Ely. Also 19 miles verses 70 miles.
You would also give them some business, I am sure you would find something you need or want.

I don't think so. You'd have to go to s USFS office or an outfitter.

There is a no longer maintained portage between Perent and Kawishiwi. Someone posted here about doing it not to long ago.
LukeMacGillie37 11/30/2022 06:11AM
I know the by the book answer, but I figured I would ask here about wiggle room.

I would like to get a permit for EP37 and plan to be in that area for say 3 days. Then I would like to drop down to EP36 and spend another 2-3 days in that area. Is there any way to get both permits issued prior to entering 37, or would I really have to come out from 37, drive all the way to the Ranger Station and get my 36 permit and drive back?
