07/01/2024 06:00PM I stayed at CR Magney the night before I entered at John Lake a couple years ago. It was beautiful, and I had time to do the hike to the Devils Kettle waterfall. It was definitely a longer drive to the EP in the morning, though. If you stay at McFarland campground you’re right at the EP, which is always nice. |

07/01/2024 03:48PM Judge C.R. Magney State Park would be an option for camping the night before with potable water and garbage receptacles. Devilfish Lake has a primitive campground and I think there's camping available at Esther Lake as well. There may actually be a trash dumpster at Macfarland but I'm not sure about that. Portage Brook Overlook is worth a quick stop particularly if the weather is clear but I don't think you can get to the falls from there. I believe the easiest way to see the falls is to park on the shoulder of the Arrowhead Trail where the Shoe Lake Road branches off. IIRC there is a short path that descends from the road to the falls. Not really camping-related but I keep hoping to see Chicago Bay Marketplace in Hovland re-open at some point. |

06/27/2024 02:06PM Two quick questions as I have never been to this area of the BW. Is McFarland Lake Campground the only nearby option? I prefer to have access to potable water before a trip and a place to drop off any trash from the drive up/dinner the night before and it looks like both of these would not happen at McFarland. I can certainly work around both of those though. What other options are nearby? On the trip up the Arrowhead Trail, I was considering stopping at Portage Brook Falls. I see there is an overlook about 1 mile away with a parking area. Is there a trail from there to the falls? Or just walk along the road? Or is there a parking area closer to the falls that I'm not seeing on the map? Thanks for any input, trip is still 2+ months (early Sept) away but I'm already in full planning mode now that my group trip for the summer is done. |
