Went through last Monday. Didn't think much of it. Sure would not want the water to be a foot lower though.

are you referring to the portage from oliphant into fern??

good timing to see this thread as i am considering going in this area for the first time either this fall or next spring.

You mean the Dooks River? Heard a guy calling it that on a YouTube video and had to simultaneously chuckle and cringe.

We passed through about 8 days ago - 5 Beaver dams (maybe 4?) requiring a quick step out and boat slide over, but the length was runnable in the boats. Have a good trip!

Good to hear. Thanks!

I just passed through here on my maiden Q solo voyage 9/10. Quite a bit of work due to all the grass growing in the waters within the channel much of the way up but quite passable all the same. I'm trying to remember how many but I think there were at least 1 large (already pictured by jlong33) 1 medium and 1 small beaver dam to pull over.

Has anyone been this way more recently? Headed here next week. Looking forward to it!

That looks like fun. Not really, ha ha. I'm thinking of going through there in about 2 weeks. I'll hope for rain!

This one was a bit of a pain 2 weeks ago

Hey Jim. I’ve done this route about ten times. The river is always passable; it’s a matter of effort. The three or four beaver dams have always been there. In high water, you can float all of them and be done with that stretch in +/-15 minutes. In low water, you’ll need to pull over each of them, then you might need to pole or pull your way through the muck at the southern end for about an hour. I’ve done it, so I know it’s possible. Mid-summer normal water levels will definitely require pulling over the dams, but you should be able to float the rest of the river. As for going the B-chain route, I suggest doing it north-south as opposed to south-north: the long portage is beautiful, but steep in places, so going north-south is less strenuous. Can add much more insight if you email me. Enjoy your trip!

It is not always passable but I'm sure there is enough water right now. I have taken this route 4-5 different years in July and never had an issue. Last year going down river, you could paddle right over the 4 beaver dams but water was very high. Going up stream, you normally have to pull over the dams. Great area, and adds nice variety and contrast to the big lakes of Pickeral and Sturgeon.

Edit: I should have wrote that you can't always paddle the river but I guess you could portage. If I thought I would have to portage, I'd choose the B chain route as it is a nice route.

Travelled north from Sturgeon to Twin two weeks ago. My recollection is there were 4 beaver dams, 3 of which required us to drag over or around. Plenty of water as of then, but I can see how it could get very low later in the season.

Very interested in the answer to this, as I'm planning to pass through here in late September.
AmarilloJim 06/27/2025 09:43AM
Is this always passable? Are there usually beaver dams through here?
