08/30/2025 02:18PM I’m going in EP26 in Sept for 4 days, just a short trip to get my feet wet. I’ve been to Wood Lake several times always with the intent with going further into Basswood but we always got hooked up with the fishing on Wood so as a group, we stuck with it. It’s my plan to go to Good and day trip into Hoist and Wind Bay and if the weather is good maybe paddle up to Basswood Falls which I haven’t seen yet. Fishing always slows me down which is fine with me. Got my new CCS tarp yesterday so now it’s time to go out and play with that. It’s a 10x14 and now I’m thinking I might only need a 10x10. We’ll see how that looks. This weekend is pack, unpack, weigh and trim the fat and pack again, hopefully getting everything situated so I’m not doing it at 3am the night before I leave, like I usually was. |

08/29/2025 09:40PM I think it’s awesome that you’re returning to the BWCA. Solo has its challenges, but it’s also very rewarding. Since it’s been a while, I would suggest going slow the first day or two, or even the whole time, and make dialing in your system the priority. Safety matters, and it’s easy to make mistakes that can be costly when solo. I pitch the tarp in different ways, but I do like the umbrella style. The cordage I used worked fabulous, but was very thin and I think I’ll bring some tree protection in the future. Thanks for the canoe love. Again, I will do my best to treat it with the respect it deserves, while also letting it live its life. I’ve already thought about taking the magic to CCS and seeing if they can maybe make on a silpoly splash cover for the front half that I could snap into place, or maybe even with magnets, Velcro, or even something that catches the bow and ties off near the thwart. I’m just looking for something to shade my front food pack from sun, and also water from my paddle. I’m not interested in anything heavy. Thanks again and good luck on your trip. Where and when are you going? |

08/28/2025 07:02PM Great report, thank you for making the effort to post it. Man that’s a beautiful canoe you picked up. Nice find. I’m sure she was happy to finally be where she was built to go. It’s lucky to have 2 caretakers that have given it the love it needs. I’m headed in on my first solo trip and it’s been 17 years since I’ve been in. The gear has changed so much, plus it helps that I can now afford some luxuries like a CCS tarp. I’m looking forward to using that and trying the different rigging methods. It looks like you hang yours off the ridge line from the center and tie out the corners. I’ll have to try that too. |
