That was a right goodie of a 10 day report. Enjoyed it as a morning read and so loved all the photos too.

Wow! That was one heck of a thorough trip report. I also recognize some of the pictures that are included in campsite reviews I’ve looked at. Thanks for all the hard work and effort since I truly do appreciate it and use it for my trip planning!

Thanks, Ryan

quote TuscaroraBorealis: "It's legal to fish there. The catch is you can't legally fish in Canada without the proper paperwork etc. Since the river is so narrow, it's easy to 'fish' in Canada from shore on the US side. Not sure how a warden would handle that situation? Err on the side of caution."

Yeah, that's what I did, err on the side of caution, especially as we were not fishing from shore.

I camped on the south side of the island just north of the falls, big grove of pines.

Is it legal to fish right up at the falls? I was having a hard time figuring that out on my map. We stayed well outside of it and got a few bass as well.
TuscaroraBorealis 08/04/2015 05:42PM
Yes that picture is of Saganaga Falls. my brother had a bear swim across the river just below the falls while he was fishing. The bass were quite cooperative there (at the falls), as well as most spots we tried on the lake.

I would rate that site 5 star except for the landing & the proximity to Canada (i.e. cabins & all that go with them). There was a great little ledge to jump into the lake (see photo) and there were blueberries in abundance in & around camp.
SaganagaJoe 08/03/2015 10:38PM
That's a great area. It looks like you had the site high off the water with the steep rocky shoreline on the southwest side of the island. I will never forget that site. that's where a guy looked at our map and said American Point is a few miles straight west.

Also is that Sag Falls I see in the picture? Did you fish there?
TuscaroraBorealis 08/03/2015 08:42PM
Just got back from a short base camp trip at Horseshoe island on Saganaga Lake.

We had a few very brief showers, but for the most part the weather was ideal. There were plenty of berries around (both blue & rasp), the fishing was decent and the bugs were mostly a none factor. Life was good!

Your welcome Lakerloon!(4x) :)

Hope it helps you enjoy your trip.

Thanks for this report. Well written and I enjoy your writing style. You had mentioned this report to me last year when I asked about the Ester/Hanson area on the message boards but I never got to reading it until now because the trip I had planned to this area for last fall ended up having to be rescheduled for this year - I leave in 2 weeks. I was planning to spend most of my time in the Hanson/Cherry area then move to Ogish for one night before exiting via Seagull (it will be a 6 night trip). Then I was reconsidering and thinking about spending less time in the Hanson/Cherry area and more nights in the Gabby/Lil Sag area and exiting via Round. Now that I've read your report I'm tempted to go from the Hanson/Cherry area over to Kek and out through Seagull as you did - I've yet to get to Kek and have always wanted to spend time there. If I hadn't of read your report I'd pretty much have my plans set. Now I've read it and I'm even more confused as to what the end game of my upcoming trip will be. What to do? Anyway, reading trip reports is priceless. It is so helpful in preparing for a trip armed with more knowledge on campsites, sightseeing, fishing, etc. Thanks and glad you guys had such a great trip! And I admire your one trout per lake rule, sir.

TB,
Enjoyed the report. I have been through most of these areas on one trip or another. I have not hit the little lakes of Cherry and the area. Definitely will need to explore that area.
I also read your winter camp trip and Solo Cpt Morgan.
Thanks for sharing.

Great report! we spent some time in this area last year and I think there are alot of things that we did not see. maybe another trip to this area is a good idea.

I need to checkout the cabin and firetower site on my next visit.
moss13 06/30/2010 08:19PM
Thank you. We use a barrel too for food. We will be coming up from Strup lake so we will check out the island site and if that is taken we will head for the site you were on and hope it is open.
TuscaroraBorealis 06/30/2010 07:43PM
moss13,

We had NO problems at our site for the 3 nights we spent there. (We use a bear barrel)

I got just a glimpse of ONE SMALLER bear on the island site. He was scared away before I even realized it was a bear. Obviously very skiddish & not aggressive at all. If he hasn't gotten any bolder? I'd say as long as you keep your food packed away properly at night, you "shouldn't" have any problems.

Hope you have a great trip,
Paul

moss13 06/29/2010 08:10PM
Oh and can you tell me a little bit more about these bears on Kek? I will be there in a week. You mentioned the island site on the southwest side. We had that site in mind or the nice one you stayed at. I read that both had bears there. How many bears, big bears, small bears, agressive bears or not? Thanks.
moss13 06/27/2010 03:03PM
Great report and thanks for sharing. I will be heading to Kekakabic for the first time in 10 days from Snowbank. Kek is our destination lake and your report and info on sites is very helpful. Thanks again!

quote vickieh69: "ahh...the much awaited report.

First, I would like to thank Paul aka TuscaroraBorealis for allowing me the opportunity to experience the BWCAW, for having soooooo much trust of himself (with my life) LOL and most importantly for having faith in me.

Secondly, I would like to add a little to the story....Tusc pointed out that I had been camping before, but I had never really gone canoeing (save for the little lake in town where you can rent a metal canoe for an hour). To prepare myself for the trip I did read a book on canoe camping that had basic info. One of the items I paid close attention to was the chapter on safety. Well lets just say the comment on day three "We pressed on in some trying conditions....." statement is an understatement. I remember saying "hey there are white caps out here" he replied "yeah, you only need to worry when you start getting sprayed by them". I thought to myself ok just keep paddling and I did. At one point we were sideways in the well of the wave. I remembered from my readings that you definitely did not want to be in that position. So I calmly stated "uh, we don't want to be in this position do we?" Tusc replied "No, you are absolutely correct" We straitened out and paddled on. When the rain started feeling like needles against my face I was just about to say "I am done" when Tusc decided enough was enough. It was not until later that evening when Tusc shared with me that he thought for sure that we were going in the water. I am very thankful that he did not share his concerns about that until after the fact. I can't even begin to imagine what he was thinking out there during that trying time with him not knowing what I was capable of doing. He performed well under that pressure.

Lastly, I am looking forward to many many more BWCAW trips. We have 2 more planned for sure, 6/25/2010 and 08/2010. Hoping to make a trip up in mid to late Sept as well.

"

As stated in the report. I couldn't have hoped for things to go as well as they did. That said, we still had our share of challenges. We crossed some tough portages, dealt with wind, waves, rain, and patches of severe weather, plus had a bear in camp. (albeit not ours)

I reiterate how impressed I am for the way Vickie handled herself while facing these challenges. Once again it was mostly a great trip, but her demeanor while facing these less desirable aspects of the trip were that of a veteran tripper. Not someone who was on their first trip. I expected to have to do more (for lack of a better term) babysitting. She was a quick learner. Very independent & confidant once she knew the ropes. The type of person who doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the trip, but adds to it.

Excellent report and pics! My group and I will be covering alot of the same lakes so, the campsite info is greatly appreciated! I have used your campsite reviews in the map section to prep my map! Thanks again!
onajourney 06/19/2010 09:51PM
Loved the report....we have travelled some of that area and love it. I need to get to Kek someday. It was fun to hear Vicki's perspective too. Thanks for the report!
boonie 06/19/2010 10:56AM
Thanks for chiming in, Vickie, and giving your perspective. I hope you enjoy your other trips. My brother and I will be up in Mid/late Sept. for a trip. I like Sept trips, but the weather can be very changeable then - usually somewhere between 20 and 80 (often on the same trip) - and it can be very windy. But there are fewer peolpe and bugs.

we stayed at the campsite you have pictured on kekekabic may 22nd and most of the 23rd. Great site but on our second night we were chased out by the bears who also knew it was a five star spot...
