Knowing TG, he's probably got one of those too! or else it's on his 'wish list' haha

I'm envious of your proximity to the BW that enables you to do trips like this. I am pretty sure I will be doing a solo w/dog large loop from ep 14 next Sept. so took some notes. That saw seems like it would make for a fine Fathers Day gift for me.

Also, I thought you were a Warbonnet Blackbird guy? Am I wrong about this?

I'm always looking to pick up any kind of knowledge I can from these trip reports, and the TR responses. Plenty here. Thanks for posting.

tg,

You describe a nice get away in your TR. The pictures and canoe are great. I also enjoy your equipment assessments/comments, thanks for sharing.

Nice report Rich.

well i didn't take the lean2+ but its far from "scrappped":) i find that setting up the lean2 does take the right space and a bit of time. i took the msr hubba because i wanted something really easy to setup and pitchable anywhere. weight wise the hubba and the lean2+ are comparable-size/space wise there is no comparison obviously.

7-for this trip i used a granite gear solo (on closeout now at Northwest Canoe) which is a really nice 4000 cubic inch pack-portagekeeper has one and likes his too but we probably pack lighter than the average bwca paddler. i also have a larger GG Quetico 5000 cube pack and a smaller GG Vapor Trail hiking pack (<3500 cubes) and really like them both. the Quetico is my go to tandem trip pack. the Vapor Trail is only for UL packing but I have done a short solo with this pack only. i am a huge fan of the comfort of the gg pack's framesheet and harness.

Thanks for the input on a pack. I think this time around I will buy a pack with some capacity. I appreciate your take on all three packs.

Great report! Sounds like you had a good time exploring.
I called off my solo for now. It just didn't feel right, and a trip like that has to feel right from the start, or it seems that it's just not supposed to happen. Forcing it just means bad juju for a solo paddler.
Let me know if you're interested in a future hike or paddle in that area.
SevenofNine 09/23/2010 11:02AM
Nice! Thanks for sharing. Wish I could be that organized!

What pack do you use? I'm looking at new ones and would love some feedback.

tg, thanks for the report. We briefly met at Wing Night while someone was holding court on how to properly use your paddle. I needed the advice.

Another cool solo trip report that has me thinking about giving it a try in the near future.

Beautiful canoe!

Last June I took my Mad River Independence (15'8" solo with some rocker) from LIS through LLC and out via Moose R North. I found that a heel angle of about 10-20* was enough to make it track comfortably. I also have a Wildfire, and it seems to want a little more heel to track equally well, with the gunwale about 3-4" from the water. I imagine this view got pretty familiar on your trip.

Nice report, tg. You'd have loved the Moose River North - a perfect setting for your freestyle boat. Do you paddle the Wildfire level or heeled?
tg 09/21/2010 12:44PM
thanks everyone for the kind words!

i normally wouldn't schedule a trip around a sporting event (going up for a few days in early october-sure to conflict with my twins in the playoffs) but this was not your average event. hindsight being 20/20 I would have been better off missing the game. but i did have to be in Duluth EARLY on Friday (conference started at 8am) so it wasn't just the game that had me coming out Thursday.

cowdoc-i can see where that one could lead to mutiny! fortunately on a solo there is no one to blame but yourself.

Nice trip report. We will be up in that area next year. Can't wait.

Nice report tg. Took almost that exact route a few years back with the family. Camped on Con Island in Shell for a few days, bypassed Lynx and went straight up into Heritage. The crew almost mutinied on the portage over to Loon. If it wasn't for the wonderful beach and a cool down swim, they would have roasted me. The portage was a little longer than expected....(glad I didn't make a wrong turn on the SH Trail!) Camped a night on E. Loon bay on one of the "up high" sites. The pics of Devils Cascade brought back memories. Thanks for digging them up. Nice Canoe!

I wouldn't leave the BWCA for any football game! That's why they invented DVR's. Nice trip report!

TG - Thank you for the great report and photos. The Wildfire is a beautiful canoe and I understand why you get allot of compliments on it.
