I'm surprised the water was so low, the water levels were quite high in August. In August a group of five of us made the long trek from Trout lake to Bootleg and back again. The fishing in the in a bay near the 'heel' of the boot was exceptional. It made the tons of paddling and horrid portage between Little Trout and the LIS very worthwhile. (The water was high, so the last 200 yards into the LIS we were sinking up to our knees and thighs. I ended up walking bare foot the last 50 yards because I had lost my shoes twice.) Bootleg is beautiful and I hope to go back from the LIS south entry point this year and exit through Chad and then Trout lake.
Don't anybody make plans for those bootleg campsites the first week of august. We're hoping the spend a whole day fishing there. Given the five of us caught about 70-100 fish in a couple of hours last year, mostly bass, though a few pike, the biggest being 30".

quote bailer: "The big mink may not have been a mink."

It was a mink. I wasn't a pine marten if that is what you're thinking. I've seen many pine martens. I've seen many minks, too.

It was WAY bigger than any weasel. I'm 95% sure it was a big mink.

Great title, even though it was misleading... or was it? Did you really stash your hang glider and bike? And are hotdogs really legal to eat in the BWCA?

Thanks for the fun read.

Group solo is a trip style I had never thought of. Sounds like it can work pretty well.
Bannock 12/20/2010 02:04PM
Here's a link to my photos on another site. Maybe it will work. There may also be morre photos at this site.

I just clicked the photo journal link that's under Bannock's name and got all the pics. Nice job.

The pictures are in the photo gallery; just the link here doesn't work. Just click on the photo gallery, enter bannock in username, and select visions of sin trip.

Thanks for the photos Bannock. I may have to go that way sometime - I enjoy river paddling.
boonie 12/18/2010 07:48PM
I couldn't see the pictures either, Tom.

Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy your reports. The group solo continues to look like the way to go for me. I love paddling around fishing and exploring by myself, but I don't think I would like camp time a lone.

It's great fun to read about trips like this where each person is in a solo canoe. I've got to do one of these sometime.

Also, I couln't see the pics. Is it just me or are they out there?

Amok 12/18/2010 07:37AM
Yeah, i'm thinkin' i have to cut out my hang-glider too. Dangit. And I wanted to take a trip off the Pallisades someday ... hmmm. maybe I could just 'sneak it in' someday when nobody's lookin'....

And your mind is the second thing to go. I forgot what the first thing was.
BearBrown 12/18/2010 04:18AM
Nice report. Sounds like a relaxing trip except for the first day.

You still remember what your memory used to be like? ;). I can't even remember that :). Or, as my brother says, "the older I get, the better I was."

I enjoyed the trip report as I've been intrigued by that entry for a while, but was uncertain how passable it would be in late Sept. Do you have any pictures?

Did the Visions of Sin get any air time on Pirate Radio? Just saw the movie last night and it brought back a lot of old memories.

Great Fun!! I guess I will leave my hanglider at home (darn it)
I wander if a hammock would work for that?
Sounds like a lot of fun was had by all... by the way, I sin enough for the rest of you!
Nice Weather is hard to beat!

I don't know why I forgot to mention the hot dogs. Hot dogs in the BWCA was a first for me too. They were great.

Great trip report!

Ken,
Thanks for writing up a trip report. Thanks Bogs for getting me in at the last moment for what turned out to be a great trip for me. It's the little things that made this trip memorable for me.

Ken, thanks for your hard work at firewood gathering. Your great tasting Bannock and companionship.

Jim, thank you for looking out for me on the portages and cooking up some great food and companionship.

Steve, thanks for a great ride up with all your experiences and information on the B-dub. Also, thanks for your companionship. Watch out for those pesky otters, I heard they're ferocious beasts that eat canoeists.

I agree with HO HO - you had great weather for October. We were on the water the first week of September and there were a couple of days with really cold temps (for September) and lots of wind and rain. Thanks for a nice report - although we've paddled LIS (north), it was nice to hear about the other direction!
bogwalker 12/16/2010 07:42AM
Hi HoHo,
The water was cold but it didn't stop Greg from Swimming on day 2 when it was still warm.

This was the warmest October trip I have ever taken. I doubt it ever got below 35 at night and the days were above 60 the entire time with that first day being the warmest. I definitely had more clothes and a warmer sleeping bag then I required.

It was great to have Greg along. He fit it well with the group of misfits that we are. :-)

Jim (with help from his wife Rachel) once again took care of feeding us well. Ken did some baking as always. I made the pancakes with real maple syrup and supplied some Maker's Mark. Greg shared his hot dogs including buns!!!. First time I ever had a hot dog in the BWCAW. I have to admit it was pretty tasty.

Happy Hour occured every evening along with a nightcap before sack time. It was a great relaxing few days.

Ken forgot to mention that he had to stop and stash his hang glider, and I had to stash my bicycle back in the woods once we saw the sign entering the BWCAW. We retrieved them both on the way out. I am not sure he missed it that much. I had a feeling the bike was illegal, but we were shocked we couldn't bring the hang glider.
Ho Ho 12/16/2010 07:11AM
Thanks for the report, Bannock. I'm looking forward to exploring LIS South sometime soon. I hadn't thought about the limited places to get out of the canoe. I'll have to keep that in mind and limit the liquid intake before paddling!

It's amazing you had 80 degrees in October. We had 32 in early September, never got close to 80. I guess the water was way to cold for a swim when you got to Bootleg though?

TuscaroraBorealis 12/15/2010 11:36PM
Nice report!

Must be something about bald eagles not being so shy in the fall? Had one dive bomb us a couple of times on Little Trout lake this past September. ('Course we were draggin a lake trout around)

Kinda ironic that you would see more people in October:) Sounded like a nice getaway none-the-less.
