Bapabear, that campsite at the top of the cascade is meant for hikers. Of course everyone uses it to sight see. In a Spring with lots of water going thru I find the cascade to be one of the most beautiful places to be.

Thanks for the report, for taking me back to part of my first solo in 2006. I just passed through Slim lake then, but thought it would be a nice one to camp on. According to the maps, Steep lake is 125 feet higher than South. The portage seemed longer than 120 rods, probably because of the climb. I saw my first moose at the campsite on Eugene where I stopped for lunch. The portage to Beartrack wasn't obvious even then and you had to get close to see it, but it was exactly where it was supposed to be. Enjoy your trips with your father as long as you're able to go on them.

Thank you for sharing your adventure. Last year we went through here and I got some good pics of Devil's Cascade. It wasn't the waterfall I expected either but it was spring and there was plenty of water "cascading" to make a pretty sight. I figured that campsite at the top of the portage was a weird place for one also but it seemed that most people used it for sightseeing and lunch stops to me. Nice views. You're the second trip report recently to mention how choked the LIS river was this time of year. I'm thinking I'd like to experience that area in the fall myself.

Dude! I guess you never heard of the zipper merge. Time for the DOT to put the signs back up so the sheeple that merge far from where they are supposed to don’t cause horrible back ups. Just take your turn at the merge arrow and don’t be rude.

I enjoyed your report. We camped at that same site on Upper Pauness last week and I agree about no wood to be found! We had enough for a couple little fires. Lots of downed wood to the south across the lake but we didn't take the time. There is a landing to the left of the rocks on the peninsula that we used.

We caught 3 little walleyes on Upper and nothing on Lower. Water temp was 58.

What is the story on that stone? Did they find it nearby or haul it in. It just facinated me for some reason."

They found it not far in the woods from where they set it. I'll try to ask them next time I see them.

Drinking out of Pauness is an experience as well. "

Thanks for the current report. Headed that way 10/3.
Ames is expensive being a college town. You can get better options in the Des Moines/Ankeny area for rooms, gas and food. The next cheap gas is the Clear Lake area.

Sounds like a nice time. I'll bet your dad really enjoys this time with you. Just curious, how old is your dad?
