quote coalcreek: "Thanks for the report. Looks like good times were had. That was our first trip almost exactly, only we were there in the spring for opener after a mild winter and paddled straight through to Cummings on day 1. We posted up for a week on that first island site on the SE side of the lake and did not see one single human being for 7 days. And on top of the solitude and perfect weather, the smallie bite was absolutely INSANE; 150+ fish in the boat on spinners in the 5 days we had lines in the water, just one after another after another. Hands down the best bass fishing of my entire life. "

Hit it right and smallmouth bass fishing is excellent. The lake has a good number of 5-6 pound northern pike and fish much larger present.

Any northern pike?

Highly recommend the outfitter we used (should you need one in the near future).

Catch ya next time?"

Thanks for the heads up on an outfitter choice. Worth checking out for a future trip when I'm in Ely next month. Already talking about a trip for 2016. Not quite sure when, but it would be fun to connect. We'll see...

Hey, hey, Pink Canoe!

Sounds like a great trip! I did that area and enjoyed it about 15-16 years ago for our first church youth trip, back when that program started. That was before they made the long portage from Burntside to Crab even longer (it was about 1 mile back in those days). I also remember paddling past that Korb campsite and thinking that it would be a cool spot to camp with a good view from up there. I would not do Burntside again without a tow. We were fortunate when we exited to have the wind at our backs but it was strong enough that we were almost surfing. There were groups entering and paddling into the wind with children (and without lifejackets!!) While we were on Cummings the wind kicked up some pretty good waves that we had to deal with also.

Sorry I could not accept your invite to meet up in Ely. My trip this year will be later--the week of Labor Day. Watch for the report...

Thanks for the trip report. It brought back memories of taking my brother on his first BW trip, which was the same route. It sounds like you all had a very enjoyable trip.
