Straight out of the lake here. Boil a bit for coffee or tea but for drinking water its like the others stated. Out from shore in deep water.

In winter I boil. I don't want to worry about a filter freezing, and unlike summer I want the water hot anyways. I do often have my doubts about the need in deep water, but I end up boiling it anyways.

Just use iodine pills like summer. Chemical reaction probably takes longer.

Well if you boiled it then you have killed the organisms that you could get sick from. If you filter it you better have your filter protected at all times because if it freezes a little bit it can crack the filter element and let in the organisms you're trying to keep out. I boil, then you don't have to worry about carrying the weight of and protecting the filter from freezing.

On occasion i have drank ufiltered/boiled water. I use the same principals when drinking water straight from the lake in summer. Deep water out from shore.

Although most of the time we end up boiling it for coffee, cider, hot chocolate etc.

Gotta question about drinking water. Who drinks water through the ice filtered, unfiltered or boiled? I'm going next weekend. We'll be on a deep clear trout lake.
