I'm agree with Jaywalker... With our amazing Nils auger - I don't care if it re-freezes. That sucker punches down 2 feet in less than 20 seconds!

I usually bring an insulated tip-up like this:

just seal it around the hole well, havent had issues even on below zero nights keeping it open until morning.

I bring an ice auger. It goes through a foot of ice in about 8 seconds. I don't care I the hole refreezes.

I have seen and used rigid foam insulation, closed cell foam pad piece, snow. The more loose snow the better. snow in the hole sometimes makes the ice growth weaker.

We just leave the chisel by the hole. So it is easy to find and open ;)

A pine bough or a few branches and pile show on top. Snow is an insulator.

What do people use to cover up their water hole (if you do this) to help prevent it from re-freezing over?
