Looking at heading up to Kawnipi late July for the fishing. Would like to try for a grand slam on the trip, and I'm thinking to get the trout in Sagangons on the way through and on the way back. It sounds like the west end is where they are located. My questions are, is the west side where I should be looking for them and should I be trying on the Silver Falls side or on the falls chain side of the long point?

Also, are there any trout in Kawnipi, are there enough to give it a go, and where would I look for them?

Thanks

I camp in Saganagons every July north of Dead Man’s portage. I don’t target trout but a couple of years ago I pulled in a 26” laker on a crankbait. The water was cooler than usual so they were not in deep water yet. I would assume that anywhere the lake is deep enough in late July, it would be possible to catch them in Saganagons.

Since I'm not a lake trout expert, I don't know how to specifically fish for them but at least I know they are in there. Good luck.

You rarely hear stories of folks catching Lakers in Saganagons or Kawnipi. Not very common to find them in either lake.

But you can find them in Cache Bay and if you take a side trip off the Falls Chain to McEwen.

We spent a night in McEwen last year on our way out of Kawnipi. Caught a few trolling to the campsite. I probably wouldn't do it again because it was a beast of a portage. Didn't catch any in 'gons.

Captn Tony, give me your e- mail, have a deep water reef that I think might get you a laker... it's not a very big reef, but the Lakers seem to like it that time of year!

Walllee I sent you my e-mail, did you get it?
Thanks

I wasn't going to reply unless this thread had some more activity.

Two spots I have had luck with Lake Trout are:
1) halfway between the "S" of Saganagons and the campsite marked Poison Ivy Site. Also the cove bay in front of the Poison Ivy site. There are two reefs north of the "S". Troll in 40-50 fow north of the reefs.
2) below the "R" of Ontario, there are two large islands that guard the bays on the north of Saganagons. Out from the gap between the two islands is big, deep water. I have located fish in 60 fow many times. My largest laker came form this spot. You must have a calm day as you are a long way from shore in open water and winds can make this spot rough.

I have never heard of anyone catching trout in Kawnipi. I'm not saying there might not be some in there, just never heard or seen any out of there.

I fished Kawnipi for 25 years and never caught a laker.

Do any of your coordinates match spots I have revealed? Curious.
