Hello everyone, I’d like to take my first trip to Quetico next summer. I am sorry considering you’ve all seen similar posts every year… I have been to the BWCA almost 20 times and want to try something more adventurous, new, and most importantly awesome fishing. Geofisher’s latest video sparked this thought. Where would you go if you had 4-6 days in the park. I am not sure how many people would be going. Could be 2, could be 6.

Priorities:

- Fishing (lake trout and walleye) Zero interest in bass.
- Nice campsites (although it seems like every Quetico site is great)
- I’d prefer not to move every day. Maybe camp in 2 sites for 2 days each then 1 site the last or first day…

I don’t think cost is a big issue. I would be coming from St.Paul. Fly-in looks cool but does it give you a benefit? I’m also open to tows. Would rather enter from the US side to save some time. So many choices, what does one do? 5-6 hours travel/day is max.

Thanks!

We are starting at Moose then to PP up thru Basswood to Burke to Basswood again, then to shade and up a bunch of the smaller lakes eventually coming out ib the middle of Agnes then back down the south end of Agnes to Sunday and out again.

North Bay and Agnes would be good layovers. Trout and walleyes there. North Bay north end east side has good sites and you would be close to your exit to Shade. We caught walleyes around the small rock islands and good bass in the east bays.

There's a large deep area north west corner (not in lost Bay). Trolled there deep but caught nothing in Aug. 2015. Enjoy your trip. Also it's a good idea to have a journal of sorts to write down tips and tricks for your next trip.

Cache Bay Falls chain is a great place to see for a first trip to the Q. Boat tow to Hook Island early in morning and your thru the entry station and Silver Falls portage (toughest of the portages though not bad) and into Saganagons by early afternoon or sooner. Saganagons is a great lake but I usually push on to falls chain. Great fishing on both Saganagons and in all the falls area. Last time up instead of going to Kawnipi we took a left and went to McEwen. McEwen had great Lake Trout fishing even in August. Had a cool campsite on North side although landing not the best. Tons of blueberries.

4-6 days imo is a short trip and tough to make it far in the Falls chain. However very cool to see and you can make it to Saganagons day one. Maybe take a day trip down the falls to fish and fun and head back.

You can also take this route and instead of heading to the Falls Chain head south to Otterback. I have not been there. I have read of high ridges steep drops offs and good Lake Trout waters. then just beyond is Knife Lake which has much to offer. Would be easy to get down there and back in a short trip imo though I do not know about those portages.

Trip up the North Shore Lake Superior is cool. Grand Marais offered great stop for dining in and out. Gun Flint Trail was great drive. All around a great option to going thru Ely.

Have a great trip

Thanks everyone for your replies. Agnes and Falls chain are on the radar. I have thought of going through Beaverhouse to Jean but it looks it could get pretty rough on the water.

The trip ISRO recommended is one I have done many times. PP to Burke to South Bay and up through Shade and Silence, then back down Agnes is a nice easy loop, That is almost the same route I will be taking with some Scouts. We put in on July 24th.
I am considering going up through Anchor Lake just to see some new territory. I depends on the portages and the kids.

That is a nice easy loop.

How would you compare a PP - Agnes loop (or similar trip) to a Knife Lake or Crooked Lake loop in the BWCA? Is the fishing a lot better? Are campsites a lot better?
