I love reading reports of places I've been and comparing observations made. Very well done. I'm running a similar route, opposite direction next week. I will attempt my first trip report after, but I can pretty much guarantee it will be lacking the detail of yours.
The closest I've come to dumping the canoe in five BW trips was the time we tried to run the chute at the bottom of Curtain Falls. I wanted to go back and look for the portage. Partner says, "No way man....we get a head of steam going and we got this." We sort of made it. Got turned sideways and thrown right after clearing the chute. I quickly jumped out of the bow to wet foot our boat safely to shore (probably not the safest move but it worked). I've since heard a few stories about witnessing people dumping.
I also echo your feelings on big water. The next closest I came to dumping was my first trip, crossing Friday Bay on Crooked Lake. There was a little chop when suddenly a big north wind picked up. Since then, I'm no fan of big water unless it's dead calm. Went to La Croix once and was perfectly content hanging near Boulder and Tiger Bay.
Finally, one of my favorite BW memories was at the same site on Iron. Nothing unique really- We made it there from Stuart River entry just in time to set up a tarp and ride out a brief but intense storm. After the storm was perhaps the most beautiful and enjoyable evening I've had out there.
Cool trip! Thanks, enjoyed the report. I've never done the Beartrap River, but it's been on my radar for several years. I'm starting to run out of years though.
