We left NE wis 2 weeks ago and arrived yesterday at Homer Alaska...camping with a gazillion RV's and tents on the Homer Spit... We have had a poster of the Spit on our wall at the clinic so we just had to do it.... The SR canoe has not been off the top of the RV since we left... but soon it will. We had to stop twice in Montana, once in Idaho, and once in BC to have it looked at .... After our experiences 2 years ago we did not put it in Wisconsin waters (zebra mussels etc) for over a month so it did not get serious examination. My bent shaft paddle got sprayed so hard in BC 2 years ago that varnish got removed. Last nite we go to hear a fellow at a local steak house called Hobo Jim who's music I have on our player when on the road. I guess I would have to call him a troubadour for Alaska similar to Jack Gladstone in Montana at Glacier NP or Jerry Van Diver (Jaystroke) for canoeing. An awesome time. Lots of smoke in Montana and BC on the way up.... serious smoke and fire by Radium Hot Springs near Bannff BC..road was closed a couple days before we go there.... Moose Mama has seen moose.... the best was a rehab place near Portage Alaska... good thing we have a lot of rechargeable batteries. Don't know when we will get near wifi next... There are areas where this is nothing. making sure you always fill up ( RV 6-7 mpg) when you have the chance. I have traveled in Canada several times and never had charge card problems...this year I even had to talk to a super on the 2nd day of calls to keep the card active...just finding a phone can be challenging..... Cell phone said 'no service' a lot.

Just saw this thread Dr.

I would have offered to buy you a cup of coffee and given you a personal tour of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge had I seen it sooner, I know sweet spots to camp and paddle. All free.

I live in Soldotna/Sterling, actually I live on Skilak Lake by Sterling.
Jewel (Singer) and the family is from Homer also.

made it home to NE Wis this Tuesday (Sept 5) ....a lot of driving. Thanks for the offer for coffee...
Stopped at the east side of Glacier NP on the way home and camped at Two Medicine...lot of smoke.... Someone explained that that area needed to burn anyway... Well when we stopped in Ely for two nites on the way home I read that one of the historic buildings burned (name escapes me now)...lake MaCDonald Lodge closed for the season early due to poor air quality conditions while we were there....
Letting these fires go under drought conditions (sound like the Pagami fire?) is just asking for it.... not much going to be left...
enough ranting

Would have stopped by if I knew which of the gazillions of RVs on the spit were yours.
We camped at a state campground 7 miles outside Homer at Halibut Cove in our RV

We did that RV waterfront thingy camping in Stewart and that was enough.

We hauled a canoe and did pull off a canoe trip.. 116 km of the Bowron Lakes.7 days.

Covered a lot of ground.. We did not go to Glacier ( that is Sperry Lodge that burned). We ducked wildfires through BC, Montana, Washington and Idaho. For once I welcomed South Dakota and the chance to breathe again.. Lots of people in BC lost homes.
Crossed Canada from Ontario to the Yukon and then doodled around all of Alask.. We loved the Denali highway.. ( rt 8)

The canoe on top the RV in kayak land should be a dead give away.... we have had a poster of the Homer Spit on the wall at the clinic for years and we had to stay there one night just to say we did it.... Like you say...one night there was fine...tooo close to the neighbor's windows.
