My understanding is that flourocarbon is heavier and has less memory than mono. As a Hoosier ice fisherman I want less memory and heavier line to get ultra light jigs down. Is there a reason I would want to use trilene micro ice as apprised to a standard equivellent flourocarban? Thanks

I've been told that ice line is just "normal" mono that's marketed for ice fishing. I don't know if that's true or not.

In your situation, I'd try braid with a short mono leader. Great sensitivity and ease of break-off if you get snagged.

I think flouro generally works better on baitcasters. And it's very expensive if you get the good stuff; the cheap stuff, in my experience, breaks too easily and has too much memory. That's just my experience; yours may differ, of course.

I truly appreciate this post. I've been looking everywhere for this! You used to write excellent, but the last few posts have been kinda boring¡K I miss your tremendous writings. Past few posts are just a bit out of track! Me and my friend were just preparing to do a little research on this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I am very glad to see such fantastic information being shared freely out there.

For icefishing, I think you want the lightest line you can use to get light jigs down. I am currently using 2lb and 4lb test on my icefishing rods, no sinker. A heavy line would not transmit the light bites of panfish very well. You want direct contact with your jig with no slack between your bait and your rod tip. The light jig needs to keep you line taut with no slack... this is best done with very light line.

Heading off this afternoon for 4 days icefishing in the Hiawatha NF. Back to packing.

I have not tried all the “ice fishing lines” that are available, but I have tried at least 10 different types. After all the experimenting I still went back to regular clear Trilene . Just seems to be the best for me.

I have never tried an "ice" mono but I can attest that the "ice" version of braids can definitely help. On one rod I have 8 lb power pro tied to a flouro leader, and another I have 15 lb power pro "ice tec" and that stuff is wayyyy better at shedding water and not freezing.
