Getting a chance to try the local fair is one of my favorite things at the end of a trip. A cold beer, fried chees curds, and burger at the Boathouse is my favorite. And breakfast at Brittons before I put in is a must.
What's your favorite pre/post trip meal in Ely?

What's that little breakfast place off the main drag?
We usually stop at Subway when we get out........here's a funny story
We were standing in line when I felt something crawling on my arm.......I plucked it off and said to my tripping partner, "here, have a tick" and casually placed it on his arm. About that time the young gal behind the counter asked my pal what he wanted.......without missing a beat he asks her with a straight face "do you want a tick"?........"it's alive" he adds hopefully.
She was of course flummoxed and it was all I could do to not burst out laughing.

Morning of starting a trip it's just something light and quick for breakfast.
If we are staying in Ely or I get into Ely in the morning after exiting the bwca it's most definitely Brittons.
For lunch or dinner it's the Ely Steakhouse.

I miss Vertins . Cranberry's too.

Maybe it,s just me but the last 2 visits to boathouse we experienced one moderately rude waiter and the second visit an incompetent waiter and a manager that when made aware of the situation just made the situation worse. The food we did finally get out of the kitchen was very good.

Britton's is TOO good. Went there early for breakfast in 2013, ate like a hog. Back to the outfitter and straight to EP 33. When we started strapping up our gear everyone just wanted to go back to sleep....;-)

Meals:
Britton's - breakfast, but exercise some portion self-control, especially on entry morn
Ely Steak House - our usual go-to both for dinner the night before entry and lunch upon return, Bucky Burger and a Steer Beer
Insula - terrific attention to detail, lots of unique offerings for brunch, lunch, or dinner
Drinks, etc:
Boathouse - decent -- not overly fantastic -- craft beers brewed on-site
Winton Road House - great bar atmosphere for either dress-up or dress-down
Northern Grounds - craft coffee, wine, and beer with the occasional live music

Based on my several visits to Boathouse over past few years I agree. Scratched from my list.

I usually dirtbag it in my truck at the EP the night before a trip so I can't comment on breakfast, but for dinner the last couple of years I've gone to Insula and the food and service has been awesome. The burgers are awesome, especially the one with the Cole slaw in it. The drinks are always nice and strong too.

We usually grab a hotel the night before and most of the time it is Lakeland cabins. My trip partner comes up from the cities so we like the space to have all our gear out and repack the bags. While doing so, we have to have Sir-G's pizza and an order of the cheesy bread.
On the way back home, more than likely Subway.

We've discussed this before that's my usual entry too. A couple day-old doughnuts from super america and a banana and it's time to GO. :)
but man, if you take the time Brittons breakfast is a different league.
Boathouse has always served me well on the way out, but for better or worse I love the character of small local microbrews. I don't feel unwelcome going in there with that post-trip dishevelment, either. Their IPA's are a little too sweet and malty, but the blueberry blonde is a fav, and the darker ones can be good too. Definitely look forward to a good beer after a trip.
Chocolate moose used to have good pastas and breakfasts, but I think their menu has gotten smaller and smaller. Can always find good pie, though.

Insula is my wife's no-brainer choice, identical to the way the guys on our men's trip feel about the Steak House. I win both ways.

I noticed the Winton Road House was mentioned. The best place to have a beer and have great conversation with some of the locals. My wife and I seek out places like that because we love talking to the regulars.

My wife and I happened upon it during an Ely Winter Fest a few years back. Nothing like suiting up and sitting outside at their ice bar at 15 below, enjoying servings from their Shot Luge. Good food, some surprisingly unique platings available. Need to go back there some Wednesday night and hear Pat Surface play.

We usually head out too early to stay in town for breakfast. Last time we did it was Brittons and it was great.
Always Sir G's on the way out for pizza fries and pizza. And cold beer. Sometimes we done the DQ too and that's just fine as well!

I've heard good things about Northern Grounds. I'll be picking up some grounds for the french press there.

Sir G's for awesome pizza when we get to town.
Britton's for an awesome breakfast before we hit the entry point.
Ely Steakhouse always has awesome food. When I lived in Ely, I used to hit open mike night on Sundays to enjoy $1 tappers and live music. Bucky Burger is excellent...the Newcastle lovers can shove it. Gross! Try the Steer Beer, Much, much better!
Grand Ely Lodge has great food and atmosphere! Don't visit much anymore, but lunch and dinner is fantastic!
Stoney Ridge. Best burgers you will ever eat! If you have the time, and the stomach to finish all of it!
Every other place is okay.
But who doesn't crave a Blizzard after a trip!

Night before: Sir G's
Morning of: Britton's
Post-trip: Ely Steakhouse
We've altered the choice for post-trip meal to a few different places and the food/service was just fine but just NOT the same!
Not asked about in the OP but on Gunflint Trail--
Night before: Ole's in Grand Marais
Morning of: Whatever outfitter we are at or our own food
Post-trip: Trail Center Cafe
