I'm doing a basecamp trip early June around the Carp area. Anyone have any info on fishing that area including surrounding lakes like Sheridan, Emerald, Man Chain etc...?? Any good campsites?
Any input is appreciated.

I prefer fishing around waldos, much better eating...

I have zero Idea now. but Bill Maggie who fished it like in the 1920's said Sheridan was the best walleye lake in the canoe country once, than he said it went down hill fast because everybody fished there. Fast forward,I wander if anyone catches any walleye there.
The Man chain is primary lake trout and very beautiful lakes. Trout run about 2-3 pounds and down. The north end of the Man Chain I think they may get a few walleyes. Emerald has some very big lake trout but your lucky to catch any trout there.
Carp itself I think it has a little of everything and is a interesting lake in itself. But to me I liked the Man chain to canoe.

I always wonder how in the heck did we get a lake name of Carp way up here. Had to be someone fresh from being from Europe?

carp does have walleye. we fished narrow inlets of water, leading into feeding bays. throwing shad raps put fish in the pan, and back to the lake. c and r fisherman here.
all the lakes mentioned have a good smallie fishery.
emerald is a gem. drift the shoreline, find the humps, these lakes will not disappoint.

I agree with bwcasolo. Carp is actually rated as a great grand slam lake. I fished it once, not extensively with my family. Weather was terrible but I caught a few smallies off a rocky point on the southern end, just before entering the narrows heading back to the BWCA/border. Carp is divided into an upper and lower half connected by a shallow narrows. That southern half has a 80+ft hole in its northern end for lakers. I caught probably the largest pike I've ever landed (only 37 in or so) on a sloping rocky shoreline on the eastern side of this lower half. The northern half (just below a set of islands) has another deeper hole that I think my fish finder gauged at close to 100 ft. I could be wrong on that. The water shallows out quite a bit as you get closer to the Sheridan portage on the western shoreline. Haven't fished it more extensively than that. The walleyes were MIA on that rainy, cold trip but I'd like to get back in there at some point. I trolled raps and through a few 3/8in jigs with twisters in a few places.

We camped on Emerald and the campsite was really nice. It was on the South side of the lake. Caught nice SM. Liked the Man chain and caught trout. Carp had a nice but overused campsite near the portage to Emerald. Caught many SM.

At one time it had reputation for lake trout over 20 pound and more. I know one around 30 pounds.Fished in the winter and also the summer and zero trout and zero bites. Fished it hard.

I wonder how long the smallmouth been there? It is a isolated lake as far as inlets or outlets smallmouth could migrate.

Had a tent setup in the south bay on April 1 on the ice. Just got up that morning and getting tipups setup. I look up and here comes 3 wolves out of a draw and heading right for me. I laid down on the ice and they kept coming and still did not see me. At 30 plus yards I was getting concerned so I stood up and they veered of to the north. Thank goodness. Sat for a minute and look up and here comes 3 more. They see me and take off. About a hour later the two groups started howling to try and join each other. One was coal black. That was a beautiful site as they came out of that draw and proceeded toward us.
If I remember right Emeralds color was just that Emerald color.

We caught literally hundreds of bass a day on the man chain.

We also murdered perch on fisher, I believe.

Yes it does flow in from Knife. No carp in the BWCA or any of Superior National Forest area.
There about as Far north as Mille lacs so far.

There is redhorse and maybe(?) a isolated area of Bigmouth buffalo fish in Quetico.
