so, I installed the basecamp software on my computer, i downloaded all the files Butthead put up for us and imported them into the basecamp software.I want to put the portages and campsites on my gps.

My gps is a 680T. What do I need to buy/find to load all this stuff for my bwca trip?

I am thinking tonite i will hook up the gps to the laptop and play around in the basecamp software. Is that where I will load the stuff onto the gps? Will it automatically show up when i go to MN on the topo map after putting it on the gps?

I think I get some free birdseye for a year. I saw a button in the software, but it said I had to have the gps connected to use it. Is that where I find the birdseye downloads i hear about?

If i buy a 24k map, is it compatable with my gps topo? Is there a map I should buy for the bwca?

To download Birdseye imagery and topo maps your GPS needs to be connected to the computer/program, for each downloading session. Once downloaded and in a folder it is available for display without the GPS connection. Play with the Basecamp software to learn how to use it setting personal files and folders as desired.
There are several ways to set up maps and what will be displayed. You can combine all info desired in one map but are limited size and amounts. I tend to add maps with specific features, such as portages and campsites as a stand alone map. You will be able to pick what maps are displayed on the unit thru the menue/maps/setup functions.

"My gps is a 680T. What do I need to buy/find to load all this stuff for my bwca trip?" You have all needed except maybe a selection of microchips for map storage and use in the GPS.

"Will it automatically show up when i go to MN on the topo map after putting it on the gps?" Yes, you will learn how to display individual/multiple files in Basecamp, how to select an area on the computer display to transfer and actial transfer to either the internal GPS memory or to an installed microchip in the GPS, or to an external memory source/drive/on your computer (such as a chip in a chip reader). The tranfered files will orient and display properly whenever selected.

"If i buy a 24k map, is it compatable with my gps topo? Is there a map I should buy for the bwca?" As long as in is listed as comparable with your GPS. Garmin 24K topo is and all Birdseye is, which the topo download includes both 50K and 24K displays as scrolled in zoom. Garmin offers Boundary Waters Topo 24K, and reigonal topos in several flavours. #rd party maps from Lakemaster and Red Pine are compatible.

You just entered a whole other time wasting hobby, have fun with it!

i got the butthead files imported into basecamp software. I can get the campsites to show up on the gps, but everytime i try to send the portages to the gps, it freezes up basecamp software. I resaved it from internet, but still does it. Any ideas?

Did you select an area for transfer of the entire map? Makes a difference.
I have my own preference and may not apply. Using just the basemap, with very little map info add the .gpx file, zoom to accommodate the info desired and use the selection tool, transferring just the selected area. Too much detail and file info will cause trouble with total limits.

You can spend lots of time on youtube with tutorials. I still do!

I bought red pine map for bwca and installed it on a sd card this morning. Looks good.

The birdseye stuff i downloaded so far is kind of old. I looked at my house and the barns i built 3 years ago are not there.

I learned how to download sections!
