Border Country : The Northwoods Canoe Journals of Howard Greene, 1906-1916
I will only try to add a link so many times before I give up. I will recommend this book though. My canoe partner has met Howard Greene's daughter who compiled this and he gave it to me as a Christmas gift. I have enjoyed the read and have gained new perspective on what camping in the early 1900's entailed. They did it somewhat differently than we do with using trains, meeting indians, and the newness of the land compared to now but that's what makes it so unique. The photography adds to the story as it is so dated to this particular time.

Doing a link step by step. First copy the URL of where you want the link to be. Then click "Add a link to this message" right under the big white box you type in. (Hit "Reply" to open a new box)
After clicking "Add a link..." you might want to make that box that opens up bigger by clicking and holding the lower right corner to drag it open (larger). This way you can plainly see the details inside that box.
So you then paste the URL in the top line and then write what you want the viewer to see for the link underneath in the 2nd line. That's it. Try it.

That book looks like it would be fantastic! I'm sure the stories are great but to have those pictures as well is huge. I think I'm gonna find a way to get this book. Thanks!

That's not quite all - after you type the name of the link in, click on "add link", then don't forget to click "submit " on the reply ;).

Yeah I've been adding links for 10 years or more here and something isn't working right. Anyway I'm glad to see a few have found out about this book. Just finished it tonight and continue to recommend. It's about a family and their group of friends that took a few weeks or more in August over a number of years to explore and challenge themselves back in the days of wooden canvas canoes, canvas tents that they had to keep applying oil to so they'd stay waterproof, taking trains for transport, and walking miles to closest towns to buy provisions and send/receive mail from home. The rivers and areas of the states/Canada they travel would be inviting to many on this site. The author was the photographer and I think it's remarkable the illustrations in the book that were the result of carrying an old glass plate camera along with some of the early film cameras of the day.
