Just made these oversized mitts. Leather is a thick moose hide. Gauntlet is 10 oz canvas with elastic cord on end and synch by wrists. I also made some linings of 20 oz wool and stitched them into the leather by the wrist to make it easier to get hands in and out while wearing other gloves. Made them oversized so I could fit my favorite insulated work gloves inside them, or wear with my new Dachstein boiled wool mittens for real cold.

Cool! Would love to do that. Where'd you source the moose hide?

I ordered online from Centralia. I just used the moose splits because I wasn't confident in my pattern or sewing at the time so didn't want to spent more, but I was very pleased this how they turned out. Ordered two 4-5 foot splits, but was easily able to cut around holes and get both mitts from one.

BTW I was ready to sew by hand with glovers, but found my old Singer was just strong enough to punch through the moose. That really speeded things up.

Here is the pattern I used layer out on a split, though I added about 1/2 inch for the oversize.

Were you able to use a sewing machine leather needle and the "outdoor" nylon or poly thread to get some strength to those seams?

They make leather needles for regular sewing machines? I wish I had know that! I used a regular #80/11 needle and Gütterman Mara 100 or 70 - which ever one is smaller. Thicker threads seem to tangle up my 65 year old machine no matter what needle or tension adjustment I use. I expected to hand sew, but on a whim tested two scraps of moose hide and it worked. The seam seemed very strong - no give even when I pulled rather aggressively. I reckoned lots of little, perfectly spaced knots with thinner thread would be stronger than fewer imperfectly spaced hand sewn with thicker thread. I think those seams will hold.

Yup, they make special "leather needles" for sewing machines. They are a bigger gauge to accommodate the bigger threads and tougher materials. So, when I am using all that heavy duty stuff I have to adjust the TOP tension of the machine - don't mess with the bottom. the TOP has to be significantly tighter to pull that big thread through the tough fabric. For comparison sake - My machine is usually set on a 3 or 4 and with the big thread and leather needle - I adjust up to about 8 - 9. And, adjust to longer stitched. - less holes in the leather making for less of a "perforated" stitch line.
You did a nice job. I have used that same style of pattern several times - works well!
So, what is your next project?

I'll have to get some of those leather machine needles. I've got moose hide left over, some something will get made.

BTW, I ended up moving the synch strap from the gauntlet to the leather so it was closer to the actual wrist.

About to post on my other recently completed project, and next I have to get going on a tent for which I already have the material and plans - just delaying the start because I find attempting to do long, straight stitches in silnylon such a pain on my machine.! Has to get done by May1 though!

I've always used a leather awl to work through any leather-sewing I have. Now that I know these needles exist, I'm going to get some for my machine.
