You see a lot of posts about how best to put a temporary modification to a rental canoe, as you don't want to "damage" something you are borrowing.

In the past, I have used an extra canoe thwart, and installed it in front of me with Velcro across the top, and I velcro on things I use all the time like, GPS, camera, sonar display... it works great, but I have a new lighter weight plan this year.

Command strips, you know the one's MC Hammer advertises for? I am going to put them on the sides of the canoe, and attach small wooden or plastic "shelves".

I am going to have GPS mounted on one side, and sonar display on the other. Then when I return the canoe, Ta Dah! I just remove the command strips and my shelves and no damage is done to the canoe. This is going to work.

I will be sure to do so. I have to think about how to make my "shelves" first, but after hanging a few things in my office with command strips, I have a few ideas.

I'm wondering if you might encounter some attachment problems with rough texture or concave shape in the area inside the canoe where you'd like to place your strips. Good luck!

I once used clear 100% silicone caulk to stick a sonar transducer to the inside of a rental ala the 'shoot through the hull' technique. It didn't fall off when portaging the boat, but peeled off pretty clean at the end of the trip. YMMV.
