At times, out of necessity, we mix up some strange meals, be it winter or summer.
I remember one winter morning on Bingschick, it was fairly cold and wanted something warm so we looked at our food supply and decided to make Chicken Noodle Soup with a cup full of Grape Nut cereals added. You know, it was actually pretty good. Also very filling.

Not a meal exactly, but I was on one of those freezing cold spring fishing trips and we drank our pop hot. It was quite good!

I mistakenly coated my fish in protein powder instead of fry coating. The result was largely inedible.

I also purposely added protein powder to my oatmeal and that was pretty bad but I still ate it.

I like taking vanilla protein powder and use it during meal times in place of some sugary powder additive which has no advantage for you. It's actually fairly tasty and helps rebuild your body.

Well, one trip I was trying to use up some spiced cider mix and everything else we could to decrease the food pack for the trip out. So pancakes were made with hot spiced cider mixed in and we sprinkled the last of the sugar on them. They tasted like Funnel Cakes from the State fair! So I began making them on a planned basis after that, even mixing them in a Ziplock and cutting a corner off to "Swirl them to make it look authentic.

Unfortunately, that idea lead me to try other, less successful additions to the pancakes like hot chocolate mix. Hot chocolate=good. Pancakes=good. HOT CHOCOLATE MIXED IN PANCAKES=YUCK! Also, Crystal Light drink mix in pancakes was another "Fail."

On my first trip my brother and I tried making a soup of sorts with cut up beef jerky. Didn't work so well, but we had more jerky than anything else and we weren't catching any fish.

I once paddled and portaged to a musky lake. I knew it was going to be tough getting there. The last two land stretches had no portage trails and there was a swamp too, so we packed dry soup to save on weight and then, because we could only catch muskies, our fish "chowder" was jammed with fish, for even a small musky is a big fish. We were so sick of eating that after six days that we didn't eat anything on the final day.

Well, if that was only an almost, an old co-worker's favorite was hot dogs with mayo and sauerkraut. I tried it once and it was ok, but not as good as my mustard and sauerkraut with pepper.

I don't know eat anything weird in the BW contrary to popular opinion; but at home the necessity of using up leftovers occasionally results in "odd" combinations ;).

quote Pinetree: "Dehydrated banana powder-that is a new one on me-never heard of it."

Mash bananas on a sheet and dehydrate to a brittle crust. Then break it up and put it through a food processor to make banana powder. A tablespoon or so is fantastic in oatmeal or in a chocolate protein shake, just not so much in the described meal!

When I was kid my buddy never had jelly at the house so we would make PB and mayo sandwiches. Never had an issue with them. I like to make PB and honey burritos now. I take it you have never tried PB and mayo before. It's not bad, try a small test sample once, who knows, you might like it?

last June we were on lynx, we had pancakes in the morning and had a bunch of maple syrup left over. went out fishing came back with a few smallmouth and a few walleye. we remembered that the syrup was still in the pan so we coated the fillets in it then breaded them. was some of the best fish that we have ever had.

Pancakes with GORP in them. Those were an invention of our nephews. I thought they were awesome.

Pasta pizza. Same trip. We didn’t finish the pasta on night one and so the leftovers became a pizza topping the next night. Not great.

Any new one of kind recipes? Low on supplies had oatmeal and chicken soup. Well it was edible will just say that. You can dump anything in chicken soup if you have to.

I do love chicken soup with cut up lake trout mixed in tho. It is good.

A little off topic but...

When I was in 10th grade, I was in a home-ec class. My mom did all the cooking at home, so I didn't know much about it, and took a class to learn. One morning we were paired off, and we had to make pancakes from scratch.

So my partner and I mixed up a batch. It seemed everyone else's pancakes were turning out just fine, with a nice golden brown glow, but our pancakes were scortching BLACK almost the instant they hit the griddle.

I was nearly crying, as my female partner was embarrassed, and no matter what temp I tried to cook the pancakes, they instantly burned.

The one other thing that was really odd, was that other classmates came by to help, and they were tasting my pancake batter, and 'couldn't get enough of it'. Several kids were coming over and scooping and eating our pancake batter direct.... like cookie dough.

Now I'm sure most of you have tasted pancake batter, and no that it's fairly bland, and not something you would necessarily want a second spoonful. But not mine, it was tasty.

As it turns out, somewhere along the way, my partner and I had gotten a little distracted, and instead of putting the correct amount of sugar in the batter, we accidentally matched the flour portion. So we put like a full cup of sugar in the batter.

Oops.

But it was really tasty.... UNcooked.

I guess to stay ON topic, we've primarily been base campers, and we normally bring PB and J for lunch or a quick snack.

One year we forgot the bread. So i just made extra pancakes, and we used that with the PB and J. It wasn't bad. But sort of defeats the purpose of a quick, cook free snack, if you have to make pancakes first.

Pb is usually in plastic and jelly I usually get the squeeze bottles plastic. If you take less there are good containers. But those squeeze bottles you can fill? I never had good luck with.

I ate a raw clam out of the Albany river, northern most wabakimi. I figured the water was pure, but raw river clam is in a class by itself for nastiness.
On my first solo trip breakfast and lunch was roasted soy beans. I was a teenager, I survived, this would kill me now.

What do you do when making macaroni and cheese with no butter or milk? You use Skippy peanut butter. It was less than good.

Very first canoe trip (1991), four of us canoed from Chapleau, Ontario to Moosonee, Ontario (which is basically on the James Bay). Took us approximately 8 weeks. We were young and ill prepared to say the least. Long story short, after 3 or 4 weeks in the woods we had lost a good bit of our food due to some unplanned rollovers (actually several) and we were tired of dehydrated venison burger and spaghetti. We were starved pilgrims to say the least. Fishing was just so so but occasionally we caught enough for a dinner. One evening we slayed the walleyes but did not have any bread crumbs or flour for decent fish fry. Someone got the great idea to roll the fillets in instant oatmeal and then dip them in pancake batter. One thing that we couldn't seem to loose and hilariously survived every calamity, was a jug of vegetable oil, which we used to deep fry the fillets. They were amazing and we all stuffed ourselves. Turns out that pancake batter with instant oatmeal mix REALLY sucks up the oil when deep fried - used up pretty much the entire jug. Think everything we ate that evening was rudely evacuated from our bodies one way or another within a few hours of consumption. Live and learn....

"The omega" peanut butter jelly and bacon on an English muffin. As you can probably guess this was designed and consumed on omega lake. It was excellent. All four of us loved it so much we started to make them at home for our families which was a big hit. This breakfast will be on future trip menus

This thread is making me laugh. I remember being so excited to come home from camp and make "trail food" for my family. The bannock and "pemmican" we had been heartily wolfing down tasted very blah at home.

As a teen on long canoe expeditions, I had a thing for eating plain spoonfuls of powdered milk. It would form a paste on the roof of my mouth that I could suck on over time. Fortunately I have outgrown that habit.

The worst thing I ever ate on trail story: For an all-female Hudson Bay trip, our group baked hearty homemade crackers using gingerbread cookie cutters before leaving. Early in the trip we had a canoe swamp and the crackers got damp. We tried to dry them out by toasting them over a fire, but within a week they were getting moldy. But calories are calories, so we fried them hard and chowed down as many as we could stomach. We had lots of laughs about our "men" getting moldy.

My husband and mother-in-law make their PB sandwiches this way. I made fun of him for years but he finally convinced me to try it. Flavor was pretty good but I'll stick to jelly.

Weirdest thing I tried was teriyaki beef jerky with spray cheese. Not good. Also tried it with PB. Also not good. We packed way too much jerky that year.

Not exactly weird but a little backwards...got to Caribou Lake one evening and our steaks were still frozen. So we had 2 lbs of bacon and a dozen eggs for dinner. Next morning we grilled up the steaks(now thawed) with hash browns. Worked fine.

We have also been known to saute up a few crayfish a time or two...

On a boyscout trip to Philmont, NM, we were divided into two groups. Our group was slow doing everything, except hiking. The other group would get up early, slam down food and hit the trail hours ahead of us. Meals provided were pretty elaborate freeze-dried meals and our group took time to make everything carefully. We'd sleep in, eat a leisurely breakfast and then pass them by early afternoon. They'd stroll into camp as we were half done with our elaborate dinner.

They wanted more free time so took to combining everything into one pot. That was 1987 and I still get together with a buddy and we laugh about their pinto-bean and peach cobbler meal.

I love chocolate, but they were so, so bad (LOL)! Now, the spiced cider? Mixed with pancake mix in a Ziplock and squirt it into the pan in a circular motion from center to edge....then add powdered sugar at the end...BETTER than those at the Fair!

My first trip, there were 4 of us and we planned in pairs for the meals. So me and my buddy were taking care of night 1 while the other 2 planned on taking care of night 2 of the 2 night trip. We got out there and while my buddy and I planned on having enough food to be a little hungry if we didn't catch fish, the other 2 guys brought 5 potatoes, apples, poptarts and instant oatmeal. All the food I brought for meals was eaten night one.

Our dinner on the second night was the tiny fish we caught, fried up in a cask iron skillet with apples and potatoes and a little re-bottled beer we had intended to drink for lunch on day 1. It sounded good, especially considering our lack of options, but apples, fish, and potatoes do not all cook in the same amount of time and we were far too hungry to plan ahead on the potatoes. It was also rather odd to take a bite of potato and actually get apple if you weren't paying attention. Also, no one brought any seasoning except for salt and pepper.

Once, taking some in-laws to Ogish - one was afraid she wouldn't like the food and so insisted on 4 bags of cheeze-its just in case. Late in the trip, on a cold and rainy afternoon, I fired up a pot of Shore Lunch brand chili. Needless to say, we had ton's of extra cheese-its, and one bag was crushed. When the chili was done, we mixed in a ton of the crushed cheeze-its and all was right with the world.
*now that she's been on multiple trips, she doesn't care what the menu is. "everything tastes good up there!", she says.

One time we were trying to fry up some fish at the cabin when we realized that the only crackers or breading that we had was cheese-its. On the bright side, they did taste alright with the walleye.

You need to keep in mind, we base camp, bring lots of creature comfort, and where I go, we never have to worry about weight.

We throw a loaf of bread in the cooler, to keep it from getting smashed. Like Nctry said, The PB and Jelly are both already in plastic. We bring the squeeze strawberry jelly. Smuckers or whatever. Lays makes a plastic potato chip container, thats like pringles, without the metal, and keeps the chips from getting squished.

We had one trip that we ran out of shore lunch. We tried using bannock mix as batter. Not great. Then we broiled walleyes over the fire covered in Taco Bell fire sauce. That was weird.

A few years ago we ran out of oil, but had bacon. We cooked the bacon, and fried the fish in the fat. Fantastic! Now bacon wrapped walleye is on every trip menu.
