Hello:

Will be heading up to the north end of Agnes the first week of June for 1 week--with luck will attempt Kawnipi for a day trip. Agnes will be our base camp.

Any suggestions on the best places to fish on Agnes/Kawnipi as well as lure selections?

Thank you.

What are you fishing for? The main river channel at the top, in the middle of Agnes can be good for for smallmouth.

McKenzie Bay on Kawnipi can be good for walleyes.

Some of best small mouth I ever had was at the end of the long bay, west of going into bird lake. Walleyes were very good there to. Just west of the end of that bay, bowling ball size rocks. Lots and lots of fish. Midday bass, evening eyes. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much

Am looking at the McKenzie map of the area you described. I assume you are not talking about the inlet that leads into Murdoch Lake but rather the smaller inlet to the east just west of the Agnes River and Bird Lake on Long Island?

The area I'm talking about is the middle river that eventually ends up in Murdoch. I can't help you with the Bird Lake area. Maybe "retired55" can answer that for you?

Fish the points where the lake meets the river. Also concentrate on the shoreline from east point heading east.

Murdoch is a great lake, too (it's really just a bay of Kawnipi, so no wonder :).

You can't really go wrong on Kawnipi. More walleyes than you can shake a stick at and they're pretty much everywhere.

Keewatin has smallish trout. Bird and Anubis are better for bass in my experience.

Bird Lake has served my crews well for walleyes and northerns. The portage to it from Agnes is not the shortest, but easy and mostly flat with no bogs. Murdoch has also served well, but the Agnes River portages to it take some work. The better portages are on the west side. From Murdoch you can waist deep walk and float the short rapids into Kawnipi.
There are a couple of nice island campsites on NE Agnes before you head into Bird but well used, so no firewood.
There is one medium sized lake just east of northern Agnes with a portage into it and not a pass through lake, so would be less visited. Don't recall its name.
It would be like going into Rawn or Buckingham from Pickerel, would be going in and out the same way.

Dack Lake east of NE Agnes. My map shows no established campsites, but with the islands and points there, should be something nice.

Reported campsite there, and also reported 6 years ago that you need to use the passwords of Dack Dacka Ack Ack Acka Dak. Also that there is a huge tree on the portage from Agnes. Just repeating what was posted in 2012.

Why base camp in Agnes and day trip to Kawnipi? Just go to Kawnipi. You'll thank yourself for it. Murdoch route is nice for fishing. Hate to reveal campsites as they can get screwed if too many people use them. One that can stand it is the Breadloaf about 2/3 way down. We nicknamed it that because it is a big, bare rock you can see from a long way off. Campsite is one of the classic BWCA flat rocks. One time there had a big walleye break my line and take the lure. A couple of casts later caught the same fish and got the lure back. The big decision is where to camp because Agnes is notorious for wind. If you are going north, even for day trips, camp at the north end. Spots by Louisa Falls are well worn plus there are too many people there enjoying the falls. If you fish Agnes trolling works well especially when there is a walleye chop to push the canoe along.

Thanks for the info. We have already decided not to basecamp on Agnes but rather use one of the campsites on Kawnipi as our base.

Thanks again.
