Planning a trip this summer, Aug 2018. Entry point Leano, most write ups talk about Mexican Hat as the first night stopping point. Calculating times, that might be a longer day then we hope.
I realize most of the day's trip is through the former burn area. We may want to stop about the middle to end of the burn area. Is the area still burned and smell like charcoal? Has it began to heal itself and growing back?
Anyone been through that area last year and could fill me in?
Thank You

The trek from Leano to Mexican Hat in one day would surely be a push with little time for fishing. Just getting to Leano from the end of pavement (at least when we went 2007) was a long journey before we even got out of a vehicle.
You'll love it!

Yup a bit much for me........but then again I triple portage. You do start a bit late as it is a long drive down a dirt road which may have some logging truck traffic. It may be a bit washboard although it seems they grade it often. Regardless, the 60 or so km should not be done in a hurry IMO. At the very least its hard on your vehicle.
Why paddle the burn? You should go to camp Wolf Spider instead on fabulous Musclow Lake and sample those extraordinary fishing waters. You can read about it on my blog....... One of the prettiest and wildest places I have thus far seen in WCPP with excellent fishing. Just click on the link provided. If you decide to go just email me for specifics. You put in at Lund.......the Knox Bog walk has been fixed and you have 2 portage days and one paddle day to arrive at heaven on earth.

Did this a few years ago, we enjoy fishing and taking photos along the way. We didn’t get to the trailhead until 11:00, and we wound up laying up short of Mexican Hat on day 1, maybe stopping at Jake. It could be done if you started earlier and humped it, depends on your style.

There is a WCPP forum on this site you could join. Post your trip plan on there as well. Claire from the park office can update you on road, portage and campsite conditions. It could be useful.
