I love slip bobber fishing from my campsite or an exposed point when I am in relax mode and have caught many walleye and other species with this method, especially in BWCA where I can use leeches. I fish Quetico every year now and was wondering if anyone slip bobber fishes with the gulp baits or any other imitation baits? If so have you been successful with this method. I see they sell lots of varieties and would possibly like to try them.

Yes the whole slip bobber thing is a fun way to fish. I love watching a bobber slide under. I have never tried it with Gulp. And in fact stopped taking Gulp because I am to much of a pansy with the whole bear gig. I took it once and ended up getting Gulp smell on practically everything before I knew it and figured I might just end up with my entire tackle bag gone. It seems to me that smell could be very interesting to a bruin. I hooked an absolutely monstrous Smallmouth with it though........huge.

Having said that if I did fish Gulp I would rough it up a bit as studies have shown that the more nicks and cuts and abrasions on the bait the more scent that is released. Night might be good time with a lit bobber. I could picture a fish being attracted via the little glo of the bobber and stumbling on the Gulp bait.

But heres a thought...........How about a marabou jig / slip bobber combo maybe with a small black curly tail or a leech Gulp threaded on the shank of the hook? Pick a day with a bit of a chop and that marabou being dragged along with the bobbing waves would look mighty seductive i bet.

Have had some luck with a jig and twister under a slip bobber, but the wind has got to be “perfect” for it to be effective. Not enough wind, not enough movement for the rig, too much wind, too much movement. I guess that’s the case with live bait under a slip bobber, but I think it’s much more critical using artificial.

I tried throwing a gulp minnow under a bobber out from camp last year. Did not have any success, but I have been skunked from camp with live bait plenty also.

It seems like the consensus is that it can work, but needs a good chop to add movement. This year I am planning to try again with some other types artificials when I am in the Q. Different types of leeches & minnows, crawlers, maybe something like the stink bait balls used for catfish... Might be a waste of time but I would love to crack the code since I love slip bobbering.

My luck with plastics under bobbers has been pretty underwhelming. If the wind is perfect, and you have a very soft plastic that's quite supple in the water (think the 5'' Gulp Leech vs. the 3''), you might get a few bites. *Nothing* like "the original," though.

I haven't really experimented too much, though, because my success has been very limited. Others might've figured out more effective ways to do it.

I have used Gulp leeches and Strike King green pumpkin tubes under a float from camp and I've caught some fish. Not a lot of fish, but still fish. I won't use it unless there is a chop on the water to give the bait some movement. I don't think it would work well not moving. You could throw it out and twitch the bobber and slowly reel it back in. Popping corks like they use for redfish might draw some attention.

You ever wonder why each new season about this time of year you can find posts around the lines of is gulp as effective as live bait, but never will you see a post that asks is live bait as good as gulp?

so true. Try 'Slimer' Leeches and if no chop...give it a little shimmy help with rod tip.
