I've got a permit for Basswood River for June, aiming for Quetico lakes off of Crooked. Initially it was just me and one other strong paddler. But recently, a few other guys joined my trip plans that are not in as good of shape. Therefore, it is possible we never make it out to Basswood River.
So my question is - suppose I swap my permit for the Agnes/Basswood Base Camp permit, am I allowed to decide to move on further (to Basswood River and beyond) after spending a night or two on Basswood lake? I'd like as much flexibility to do whatever is best for the group.
I don't think that is allowed. I believe it is restricted to base camping only in the areas you described. On the other hand it seems that last year there was some level of disconnect between the Prairie Portage staff and the Park HQ as to what is allowed. I would email the park. They are good about replying and then you would have something in writing if they bless whatever you propose.
I don't think you could feasibly go to Basswood river on that permit. In the description is says it can be used to base camp on North Bay, or used as a regular Agnes permit. So technically you would have to travel up to Agnes before tracking back to Basswood river.
Thanks, all. I think you both are right. I called the Atikokan station and they told me the same thing. Seems like it is the one exception of the "through the entry point" rule.
