I've heard there was deep water around Rose island so I will circumnavigate that twice on my journey. Is there any deep water in McKenzie bay? Was thinking the water in there might be a little clearer and to their liking.

Have fun! I’ve fished those areas. If you find lakers, you’ll be the first. I know it’s listed, but no one I know about has caught one. Enjoy the waldos and bass.

Good luck finding trout in Kawnipi. I've scoped water over 100 feet deep east of Rose Island and fished the area for trout. Only caught pike and walleyes. I've fished Kawnipi many times over the decades and have yet to see or hear of anyone catching a lake trout there.

What about the water clarity and depth in McKenzie bay?

Stained and not deep enough.

Somehow the lure of catching a laker on Kawnipi has cost me many hours of good walleye fishing.

Nothing deep enough in McKenzie bay.

I have fished deep water on Kawnipi... some nice Northerns and walleyes can be had...behaving like lake trout, but no lakers for me.

Not deep enough in McKenzie Bay. If they're in there, they'll be in the main channel, probably on the north end of the lake.

I have read that they're in there (in the BWJ, in fact) but I've never seen/heard any reports of any.

McKenzie Bay is very stained and not that deep. Doubt lakers are there.

Only place I've ever "heard" of one being caught is west of Rose Island in the deep channel there.

I wouldn't waste my time fishing for lakers on Kawnipi. I'd enjoy the boatload of walleyes instead. :)

I keep checking back every time I see a new reply hoping someone has caught a laker on Kawnipi?

I heard it from a friend who heard from a friend that they talked to a guy who knew a guy that was told by someone else that they had caught lakers on Kawnipi...that’s the truth if ya can follow it all :) so I have heard of people catching Lakers.
