Out here in California, our western grey squirrel is not a pest. On the other hand, many of our cities are "infested" with imported eastern squirrels which generate a lot of complaints.
During bad winters, following failures of the pine cone and acorn crops, I've avoided shooing the grey squirrels from the bird feeders and have set out squirrel feeders.

There is probably no way to keep squirrels from visiting a feeder, short of extermination. Some things you can do is get a baffle for the pole (if you have one) that your feeder sits on. Another thing is to make sure that the feeder is at least 5 feet from anything the squirrel can use to jump to your feeder from. They will still show up at the bottom of the feeder and eat what falls to the ground. That is probably when you want the birds of prey to show up. I saw a show years ago called "Squirrel Wars", if you can find it online watch it. It is freaking hilarious.
