You know.....the wind and current opposing near equal in a few inches of chop that moves you ever so slowly along the ridge of a reef at dusk. We were dragging tipped jigs and could seem to do no wrong. 9 ft. was the majic number and we happened to be on it most of the week on Erie 3 weeks ago.
I was thinking , "Why does this seem to never happen in the Bdub in a canoe.....WITH drift socks?" It was sweet. It was almost like idling on a railroad track with your hands off the wheel and easing right down the line holding fish. Rinse and repeat. Wallies were hot. Three over 28,(not mine) a dozen two footers, and gobs of good eaters for pair of us. Can't wait to experience another 'perfect drift'.
I am not the best of anglers, so when we have a few days like that; it is memorable. I hesitated posting for I am not a camera person, but the drift was so easy to do along target in those conditions. I will remember those nights with fondness. oth

I bought a drift sock to try for the perfect drift in the BW this year. I'll let you know how it goes...

Where were you fishing OTH? We typically put in at Sterling State park in Brest Bay near Monroe Michigan. I heard the Detroit river bite was incredible this year with spawning males by the thousands.

The thing is... you know it happens in the BWCA and Q!! That's what keeps you coming back trip after trip!

My perfect drift happened to be 2PM on a bright, sunny day with no wind. The current below the falls rotated our canoes in a large circle in 10 - 12 feet of water. Terrible conditions for walleyes, but someone for get to tell the fish! It went on for a couple hours and when we finally left, they were still biting! My memorable quote from that afternoon was regarding bait... "You coulda caught 'em on a cigarette butt"

The wife and I were fishing Basswood and woke up the last morning and the wind shifted from west to north. I thought oh no, cold front city. We wanted to take a few out the last day and chances looked slim to none. We drifted the south side of a point and we had one of the best fishing days we ever had. You never know

It looks like several smallies are hiding in the middle.

All that great tasting walleye, then throw in a bass.. nice. Must be from a Southern state.

It wasn't to long ago that Canadiens would turn up their nose at Pike. Now they largely know better.

On lake St Clair we prefer the smallmouths over the walleye.

I can confirm on the Detroit river, it was the best year I've ever fished it. Went in April 2 days caught a 3 man limit mid day in 2.5 hrs with a rookie in the boat. Next morning 3 man limit in under an hour. Took my dad up to try in mid May. Much slower but I still put a limit in the boat in a half day.
