We go in next week and are first timers basecamping and heavy fishing. Any recent reports, water temps, stories from the area, etc. is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Tight lines!

Where are you heading to? My first and only other trip I exited there and remember a super difficult portage (long, rocky, uphill) though I’m not sure which one exactly. I remember the area being beautiful although I didn’t fish it at all.

I don't have any recent reports. But I have basecamped Horse twice...

I suggest that you go up the Horse river and fish the pools and eddies. There can be really good fishing up there.

Also, it is worthwhile to go check out Lower Basswood Falls. It is a great photo opportunity and a good place to fish.

Thanks! Yeah we planned on either lower basswood or the bays of crooked lake for a day.

2 years ago in mid-July we couldn't catch a cold on Horse but ended up fishing the river on a windy day to get out of the wind and did very well. Beautiful area.

Just came out at Mudro this pm. The eyes were slow on Fourtown, Boot and Horse. The guys up on Crooked were doing well all week. Small mouth seem to be on post spawn slump. Caught large pike on Boot. Met another forum member named Van who caught a 46 plus inch pike. Most everyone we met said fishing slow .

Thanks for the info. Was the 46 in pike caught on boot as well?

That was a nice pike. I was in the group of kayaks that chatted with you for a minute on boot.

My group had no problem on iron but the fish were slow. I pretty much let them take it and when my drag kicked in I’d grab the line and set the hook. The walleye were very lazy.
