I have to brag just a little bit... ;) and I wanted to share my new boat.
I just finished a new cedar strip build. I designed the boat and built it from scratch. I started building in December and just finished up a few weeks ago. It’s a 19 ft, assymetrical hull , 39” beam tripping boat meant for the whole family with a traditional look to it. White cedar , basswood, and walnut.
I’ve had it on the water a few times now and it will make its maiden BWCA trip in a few weeks over the 4th. Unfortunately, I have to put the ugly MN stickers on it :)
If you’re interested, I chronicled the entire thing in the builder’s forum. I hope the link will work even if your not subscribed to that private forum.

Where'd the weight come in?"
Sadly it’s yet TBD. My scale only goes to 300 and I’m 250 :). I’ll get it soon.
Despite being much larger, it feels the same as my freedom. That’s due to this being my 2nd boat and better craftsmanship. I’d guess 70-75 as my freedom is 70.
Just to show how large it is, Here’s a comparison to a freedom- which is a larger canoe by itself 17,5’ and 36” beam. I think the freedom would fit inside it!!

Podunk: "Very nice, impressed that you made up your own design. Made your own seats and yoke too by the look of it. How long did it take you start to finish?"
People always asked me this with the last one so I tracked every last minute I spent on it this time- And it was exactly 299 hours

Pretty boat indeed! At that weight how does that yoke pad work? I have heard some people say ' puts too much weight on neck instead of shoulders' . Looks like you have experience with your freedom though.
Without the bad times, the good times wouldn't seem so good.

Works great. I’ve heard that too but I chose this style because I find the horse collar type more comfortable for myself- it distributes the weight across your upper back instead of just on your shoulders- I’ve never found that comfortable.
In fact the reason the freedom pad looks so wonky is because I made shoulder pads and converted it into a horse collar.
To me it’s like if you were doing squats- the bar goes across your upper back.

bfurlow: "That is just a beautiful boat. I am in the planning/saving $ stages of starting a build this fall/winter. If it comes out half as nice I will be ecstatic!
Congratulations!"
You can do it! It’s an awesome experience- and nothing like paddling your own. I quite literally learned everything from canoecraft by Ted Moore’s. Keep us posted on yours!
