What size lure do you guys like to troll for eyes and bass do you use smaller baits like #5 flicker shads or larger Rapalas?

I like smaller finesse baits in early spring but quickly move to larger baits, often much larger baits as the year progresses. I believe, and numerous articles suggest likewise, that most anglers tend to fish to small of baits.

Many guys will throw a 3" curly tail on a jig. I don't even own any that size.......6" is minimum and the 8" Kalins octo grub will catch plenty of "eater size" walleye while being much more attractive to the big girls.

Big lures still catch plenty of small fish. I have had 14" walleye attack 10" Muskie lures (what were you thinking?).

He did specifically ask about trolling.

Over the past few years, I have had amazing success with the traditional #11 or #13 Rapala Floating Minnow in the perch color. They don't troll real deep - maybe 4' to 8' - but we're typically trolling shorelines and rocky points anyway. By the time our trip is done, my lure is usually all chewed up.

I might try some other baits if things are slow - Shad Rap, Fat Rap, Sparkle Tail, Lazy Ike, Flicker Shad... and mix up the colors until I find one that works well.

I like a #10 or 12 husky jerk. Regular or deep diver. I take the forward treble off of the # 12's.

I like bigger lures, as they're more versatile (easier to cast if desired, easier to adjust depth by letting out more/less line).

My go-to for Shad Raps is at least a #7, most often a #9. I like the biggest Husky Jerks, too. Plus, you'd be amazed at how many fish of all sizes will crush an Original Floater #18. That's a big lure, and the little fish have no problem with it.

I always try a bunch but seem to consistently have the best success with the blue/ silver husky jerk with a slight orange highlight. Not sure of the size but it’s the largest normal sized husky jerk you can typically find.

Yes he did. Thanks for the correction. I suppose my advice would be much the same........I generally like bigger lures when casting or trolling and believe guys use stuff which is to small way to often.

The exception is early in the year or when fishing gin clear lakes. When fishing super clear water I tend to downsize and go ultra light with line and use more mid sized offerings. One of my favorite offerings early in the year (may, June) is what Jackfish suggested..........a j-11 original rapala in perch. I like it with a fas snap (of course I do) and 6lb line. Very effective and will take the larger variety of fish. The J-11 is the smallest 3 gang treble hook. With lighter line it can really shine.

what has become my favorite trolling lure in the BW , is the bill dance suspending emerald shad , it actually gets down to 20' and suspends down in the strike zone during turns, the pauses have created many strikes and fish. i believe it is a discontinued model as i got it off of ebay. along with some other older bombers.
(middle lure in pic) early ice out conditions hard to beat the F-18 blk/gld rapala , (top in pic)

We troll SR9 Shad Raps and the smaller Hot-N-tot. Most importantly, we know what depth the lures are running. A SR9 will go 20 feet deep on 10 lb test and 100 feet out. The hNT will go 14. Pick whatever pretty color you like, justknow how deep your lure is running.
