This morning I tried to buy an entry permit into Brule lake (41). I wish for this trip to be a solo excursion. However, I got a red error message when I tried to book because it said my group must contain a minimum of 2 adults. How can I purchase a solo permit for a group size of one adult (me)? Has it anything to do with the specific entry point not allowing solo entrances?

korte, a quirk of the system requires a minimum of two people to be signed up. When you go to pick up your permit you can change the reservation to one and get a refund for the difference. No solo restrictions anywhere. Make up a trip partner.

Lindy is correct....... select 2 adults and then they will change it to 1 person and you will get a refund on your card when you pick up your permit.

That also happens to me when I do a daddy/daughter trip. It doesn't let me select 1 adult and 1 child. I have to put 2 adults and then they change it to 1 adult/1 child and I get a refund when I pick up the permit.

Funny story......... on my 2nd solo we got so busy talking about my route/trip at the outfitter that he forgot to change my permit to 1 adult and I didn't notice it. When I got checked by a Ranger at my campsite he looked confused and kept looking around and asked where the other person was. He started laughing when I told him I was solo and he said "I didn't think another person would fit in that solo canoe with you and your dog". He wrote a note on my permit and told me to stop at the Ranger Station after the trip to get a refund, but I didn't bother.

I've always thought this was an odd quirk for the online reservations.

They also do not allow for senior discounts, but are good at refunds.

I think they do it also to make a individual that is not going to use his permit actually want to cancel it in the time allotted and get the majority refunded. If it wasn't set up for two people I know some would just let it ride and forfeit the money which really isn't right. If not going to use it it-cancel it.

It seems like the govt is missing out on some money with this system... If all I have to do is ask for a refund on the day of registration (entry day), then essentially I'm holding an entry permit hostage that no one else will get to use. Now instead of the maximum 7 people entering Brule on this day, only 6 will get to go. Leave it to Uncle Sam to be bureaucratically inefficient?

Availability is not based on the number of people entering on a certain day. It is based on the number of permits available for that day. Brule Lake has a maximum of 7 permits available daily. Between one and 9 people can enter on one permit. With each permit taken a minimum of one person with one canoe can enter there, or a maximum of 63 people with 28 canoes can enter there each day. Good thing most groups don’t max out the numbers.

^ This makes a lot on sense to me.

True or not, it makes me feel better about the system.
