I have not been able to find the large Rapala Deep Tail Dancers locally. Of course I have procrastinated long enough that I don't have time to mail order them. Is there anyone in Ely that stocks the size 11 in Purpledescent? It would be even better if I could support one of the sponsors of this site.

Last year, I got some at home and some in Ely. I had purple ones, just don't remember if they were from home or Ely.

I checked my credit card history and it looks like I picked it up at Piragis. I'd call ahead and ask if it's something they carry in the size/color you want, and possibly even ask them to hold one for you if that's something they'll do.

If Piragis doesn't have any check with TGO or VNO

Depending on where you're driving from, I can't imagine you won't pass by a bait shop and/or sporting goods store that'll have a decent selection.

Stopping in new to me sporting goods stores has been known to throw my travel schedule off by several hours.

It works much better if I limit my shop until after I have reached my destination. I have checked Bass Pro, Sportsman's Warehouse and 3 different Cabela's in my area. The search has been getting expensive.

It's funny how one item you can't find at your local shop can easily turn into a $100+ detour. You always find lots of things that look necessary when searching for the one lure you actually want.

Is the purpledescent only available in the "deep" tail dancer TDD models? I have never seen it in the original TD series and don't think the Rapala website lists it as an option????

VNO carries a wide and varied supply of raps. Give John and Lynn a call and see if they have them.

They are also in-stock at Cabela's in Woodbury which is the east side of St.Paul coming in from Wisconsin on I-94. Easy to get to and get back on the road depending on where you are coming from -- I'm in southwest Minneapolis near the airport and it takes me 20 to 30 minutes to get out there. YMMV.

Just buy them on-line. Rapala is a Minnesota based company. Order today, have them in 2-3 days. Rapala Tail Dancer Series

Rapala has always been a Finland based company with a great reputation. I know recently(about a year ago) bought out another brand name fishing tackle business. You look on the rapalas also many like everything is made by a Asia company.
The price of deep divers has almost doubled in recent years just like a lot of tackle.

Also at one time deep divers were made in Finland and were tested for diving straight and down. Once they switched you get more that do not swim down as they should. They are now not field tested ready as once they did. Tjere was a good article a couple of years ago on this fact.

What the heck! Say it's not so! Rapala is no longer a Finnish company!

Not a huge fan of the purple even though it seems to be the rage. I suppose it makes for a good Cisco imitation. I am far more partial to the rainbow trout and that pink underneath. The deep diving bomber long A's in Rainbow trout was also a whack'em lure.

There still a Finland company, just like everybody, they outsource some of their products where they are built.

Ah! One thing the Fins know is fish and fishing. I would like very much to visit that country some day.

I have not noticed any quality control issues. But I have been using Japanese stuff lately.........another people who know fish.

FWIW........My Dad picked up some thunder sticks for Lake Erie walleye trolling and I couldn't get one to run straight. Lots of folk like them and apparently they catch plenty of fish but I wouldn't own one.

Yes most Finland fishing products are well respected.
The Rapala fillet knife must outsell other similar knifes by a huge margin.

What’s your deadline for needing them? I have two that are brand new and still in the box that I could ship to you.

I concur about rainbow trout pattern. I like it better than purple. Good old silver and black will also get the job done nicely. If you can't find tail dancers, large Reef Runners in the above colors work very well. I use the Reef Runner way more than the tail dancer. I guess what I'm saying is, don't sweat it if you can't find purplescent tail dancers.

I'm a blank canvas... What do you catch on this bait?

Typically used in the BWCA to target Lake Trout at depths of approx 25ft ( deeper w/ leadcore or snap weights or down-riggers). But also not a bad walleye bait at all.

As for the purple -- it's no secret magic trick -- Purple is the last color to "disappear" from the visual spectrum in deeper water. Reds go first, then orange, etc. Decent article on this here:

To add on to the color chart, the colors will disappear faster (shallower) in murkier water (either stained or with more plant material). For this reason, and it could be superstition, I like to get lures that have contrast. It could contrast with itself (half light color, half dark color) or it could contrast with the environment (dark leech over sandy bottom; white minnow over dark rocks).

I've also been looking for Tail Dancers. I looked at the Rapala website but found that many of the colors that are in demand are out of stock. Depending on what you are looking for it may be better to look on-line for what want.

The claim to the purple is that it’s visible deeper underwater than any other color. At least that’s what I was told.

I caught walleye, smallmouth, northern and lake trout on the purple deep diving taildancer. I'm a believer.
