we found it to be a tricky area. ended up too far to the right in the swampy area, should have stayed more left. then perhaps we weren't on the portage but we portaged across some tall brush and hummocky type terrain.
I was through there in 2016, although from the other direction. I found it pretty straightforward and doubt you'll have any trouble. There were a couple beaver dams. IIRC, you'll have to paddle well up into the bay it ends in for the start. I actually really enjoyed traveling through there and wish it had been longer. See my 2016 trip report (2 parts) for some comments and a link to my Shutterfly albums for some pictures.
If you are headed north from Boulder, finding the portage that goes north to the Cap-Ledge portage is also pretty straightforward as long as you're not trying to take the "shortcut".
Did it a couple weeks ago and had no issues at all. Coming from Boulder to Adams there was a small beaver dam we had to pass before we hit the portage, but the water levels were high so we floated right over it with a just a little push.
