I have a non-BWCA trip question for the members here. I am going to stay in Grand Marais for a week in later August for some day hikes, and then a 3-day backpacking trip on the SHT. I was wondering if anyone could give me any info on any non-hiking sites to see along the north shore. I know there are a couple lighthouses to check out, but never having been to that area, I wasn't sure of other things that are worth seeing.

Thanks for any information that can be provided.

Most of the State Parks along the North Shore have falls you can see with a short hike. The most interesting is Devils Kettle in Judge C.R. Magney State Park.

There is an overlook of the town of Grand Marais just up the Gunflint Trail a bit.

The light houses are much closer to Duluth and include Split Rock Lighthouse and the Two Harbors light house.

Just took the Split Rock Lighthouse tour with my kids a couple of weeks ago, I thought it was well worth the minimal expense.

Gooseberry Falls Park was also a hit for us, they've also got a nice visitor center.

For the corniest attraction of all time, stop at Putt N Pets Mini Golf on RT 61 just south of Grand Marais. Put a quarter in the machine for some animal food, put the food in the buckets attached to a rope and pulley, and watch the goats up in the tower pull the buckets up with their teeth. Jeff Foxworthy would like that one.

It’s all great, winter is best. A few of my favorites;

anywhere rocky on the shore

shovel point, tettegouche state park

park point, Duluth

split rock

high falls

On a miserable days like today these photos give me the chills (the good kind). Winter can't get here soon enough.
I second the Devils Kettle I believe it is about a mile walk/hike but well worth it.

Palisade Head is a cool stop if you'll be driving by that way.
