Hello everyone,
I have been looking for a canoe and would like your advice/experience regarding this canoe: 1994 Canadienne 17 Green Kevlar Old Town Canoe
I have a young family and would need a canoe to be stable for a toddler but also available for a trip to the Boundary Waters. I have found this canoe for sale on a work swapshop and it seems like a great canoe but would like your advice first. Also what would the price range be if it is in good condition?
Thanks! Dave

As a kevlar boat, it is not as light as most. I think the version with aluminum gunnels is 56 pounds. It is a tough layup, however. Version with wooden gunnels is heavier by a few pounds.
I have seen these go from $450- 2000. Although the $2000 one is still not sold after being out there for a year or more. If it is in like new shape I would pay $1200, well used, but still stiff $800, a beater $300 to $400 if you have the interest in rejuvenating it. If it does have wood gunnels and they are rotten, bad seat, etc., that should knock off a bunch.
It is a real nice canoe and there are not a lot of them out there, but I don't feel that adds a lot of value. The value is in the condition.

Not an Old Town, but I actually just returned from 7 days in the BWCA with my kevlar Bell Canadienne 17. In addition to the BWCA, I've also paddled it in a variety of river situations and have found it to be a fantastic canoe. Tracks super straight, but enough rocker to be really responsive and a sizeable load capability to boot.
Highly recommended hull.

I have a 17 foot Old Town Canadienne. I have no plans to sell it any time soon.
I feel stable in the canoe. I have paddled it on flat water with children as young as 5 in the middle.
Have you heard of Ralph Frese the designer of the Canadienne? He built his first boat at 14 years old. One way to look at the Canadienne is as the culmination of a life time of building canoes.
The market for Canadiennes has come up more than once. It came up earlier this year.
