Hi all, any thoughts/feedback on a trip with a 5 and 7 year old starting at Baker Lake in July or August (2019)? I was thinking maybe go north into N Temperance, turn around and come back out via Burnt, Smoke, and exit at Sawbill. This primarily keeps us on small lakes, which I would prefer with 2 little ones. Plus it gives us a chance to dust off seldom used map and compass skills. If feeling particularly adventurous, we could try a day trip to Cherokee from N Temperance; my understanding is the challenge factor of the 2 portages might be a bit much for young kids though. Other thoughts are welcome, of course.

It's a great area with little ones. I do a daddy/daughter trip with one of my girls each year.

When my older daughter was 9 we entered at Baker and camped on Jack. It was one of my best trips. Small water, easy portages, great walleye fishing on Jack, and we saw moose every day including seeing 5 while we paddled from the ep to our campsite on Jack.

When my younger daughter was 7 we camped on Smoke entering from Sawbill. That was also a good area.

Thanks! I was looking at maps, and thought this looks like a good entry point looked like a good bet for a first time trip, and for kids. I will look up trip reports.

Very true, around 19-28 trips depending on the kid. They like it because of the cave.. so cool, and the swimming is really good as well. They are begging to go back.. oh and the walleye fishing was outstanding. They ate walleye for lunch and supper every day.
