Sat down the other day and started cutting and sewing. Finished these this evening.






About 90% sewn by hand as my sewing machine could not handle the thickness and weird density of fur, though I was able to use the machine to stitch the cuff ribbon, hide, and wool liner at the very end. Took quite a few hours, but got into the rythem and gotter done. Need to come up with a harness now.







Made from winter beaver fur from near Cook MN, moose hide palms, and the liners from some remnants from a heavy wool Yugoslavian army blanket I got at the Ely surplus store.

Beautiful! I’ve been looking for a new sewing project. I’ve got a tanned beaver pelt in the basement. No moose hide, though. Deer hide would do.

There are about 3 or 4 popular patterns out there for mittens. I'm not sure what this one is called, but I call it the "thumbs down" pattern because of the goofy way the thumb is when you cut it. I just copied it off the internet, and practiced with some cheap fleece until it seemed right. I also made a pair of mitts out of moose hide and canvas last year which helped me learn about the pattern a lot.
