I know it depends on snow amounts but is the Angleworm Trail a reasonable day hike in winter? I plan to take micro spikes and snowshoes as well as gear to spend the night if necessary. I’m looking to go around Dec 9. Any other day hikes in the BW? Thanks.

I haven't done the trail in the winter so certainly anybody who's done it will have a better opinion than me, but I think you'd need really good conditions to safely finish it in a day in the winter, especially given how short the day is in early December.

The two miles from the lot to the lake would be easy in just about any conditions. I think if I were to try and do it in a day in the winter, I'd plan to do it counterclockwise - I find the eastern side easier, and it meanders farthest from Angleworm Lake. If you get to the camp at the top of Angleworm and realize you're low on time, you can cruise back across the lake ice, and then the easy two miles back to the lot, cutting out the trickier western side. But that does depend on the ice being solid; I'd check with the Kawishiwi ranger station on that ahead of time.

Have a great time, and take pictures!

Thanks Tom. I will call the ranger station about ice/snow conditions. Maybe I'll just plan it as a 2 day since I was going to take all my overnight stuff anyway. Or do a one day out and back on the SHT or Kek instead but I prefer loops. Thanks again.

Since daylight is limited at this time of year I would plan to spend a night on the lake. Why not enjoy a night out on Angleworm since you will have to work to get there? Can't beat that is what I say!

Make sure you bring something to split wood if you plan on a fire. My buddy and I stayed there years ago and getting a fire to stay going was tough because we didn't have a means to split wood. Have a great hike.

Thanks for the advice. Decided to do something closer to home and save Angleworm for a time when I could devote more time to it. Did a snowshoe into Little Union River yurt in the Porkies for an overnight stay. Nice trip, managed to find some untouched trails in addition to the groomed trails. Saw no one else while on the trails. Very peaceful trip. Thanks again.
