Almost time to start another amazing adventure chasing Lakers through the ice. Here is a view 60 feet down of what happens in BWCA Lake Trout fishing. The lure of the left is a jig and the one on the right a live minnow.

Cannot wait. This will be my first season ice fishing. I primarily catch walleye/pike/bass on open water so I'll be targeting trout almost exclusively.

HungryJack -- any connection to the lake of the same name? Had a wonderful time at HJ Lodge with my son this summer.

I love that lake and the name reminds me of pancakes!

Smallmouth heaven for sure. We struck out trolling tail dancers for lakers but marked a decent number. They were just a bit deep for us I think.

The bar at the lodge is a great place to unwind. There's a bible camp across the lake and the bartender was telling me how every Friday night at the same time it's like the invasion of Normandy with the camp counselors paddling across to get their drink on. They can hear them coming as they raise a bit of a ruckus :)

Lakers in Hungry Jack? I have not heard of them there. Did you actually see any caught?

Nope. They could've been walleyes, we marked fish really deep -- 50 feet or so, in the big hole as you move east from the resort.

I think stocking efforts in the early-mid 2000's were deemed a failure. The DNR still lists the species as present but who knows? We used our transportation times to troll deep around 25-30.

Probably Redhorse Suckers. They get big (over 2 pounds) and often stay deep. Tough to distinguish from a Walleye.

A couple years ago, somebody posted and was wondering what those deep suspended marks on HJ were. I replied with a link to an Infisherman video that featured suspended smallmouth. Look it up; pretty interesting. Never know, though.

Well I wouldn't be shocked, the SMB are pretty much everywhere in that lake! (not a bad thing)
