Well, looks like the northern 2/3 of Minnesota is going to get a good old fashion snow storm with wind and everything included. Talking 6-13 inches in much of the area and getting deeper as forecasts get closer to Thursday. Time to get the snowblower and snowshoes ready.
Whitewolf, do we still have a chance of a fizzle forecast? I look at the forecast and they are talking something rare. A 100% chance of snow on Thursday and Friday.

This morning they (local radio) said 4 to 8”... then later it was 6 to 10”...and now already they are at 8 to 14”. That is from tomorrow night to Friday morning. Guess we could get some maybe. Glad I got the flu bug out of my system today. :) I’m guessing I’ll be busy for a change. Haha.

Been away for the Holidays. Yes, this is a storm, and no, it will not fizzle. At least for many in C.MN and N.MN including the Arrowhead (if you're in the Twin Cities, it's more a fall/spring storm with a mix of a mush), especially those lake effect locations along the North Shore which will see SE winds advect moisture over the hills and just enough cold air aloft to cool it and produce 1' to even 2' of snow over the snow prone lake effect areas. Nothing really spectacular. Just a good snow event with some wind to boot on the backside. Latest thinking and I (personally) would move the 6" line and corresponding other values 40 or so miles to the NW.
The following graphic doesn't include rain - just snowfall and many areas S of 45N Latitude are going to see nearly of 1" of precip that is NOT snow.

Yeh Ben I see one now by your area up to 17 inches now. Arctic by the Two Harbors may beat you. You may get the honor of the most snow award.
To me I kind of enjoy it. I don't like the wind and blowing tho.

Snowing hard in in Central Minn! Close to 3 inches so far!!!!!!!

Northland snow totals as of 6 a.m. generally ranged from 6 inches in Grand Rapids and Deer River to about 1.5 inches east of Superior. About 3.2 inches had fallen at the Duluth airport as of 6 a.m. Brainerd 4 inches.
One National Weather Service spotter reported 10 inches of snow about 12 miles northwest of Silver Bay along Lake County Highway 11, with that road nearly impassable in a four-wheel drive truck.

That map makes no sense... it shows 11 here which is shy yet of what we got. But I can’t believe all around us got so little. It was a crazy mess for me... was plowing all day and have to start all over in the morning!

Make sure you look at the time when the report was reported to the NWS. Most of the higher amounts are much later than the "lighter" amounts.

arctic: "18.7 inches of new snow at my house in the past 36 hours. Finally, something to ski or snowshoe on."
Wow,that is something else. With all the snow you get do you have to shovel off your roof or anything?
About 12 inches in Brainerd.

I put on a metal roof a couple of years ago, so most snow slides off, which puts my dog in a panic all day.

I was wondering about if you have a metal roof. Your seeing more of that in snow country.

I installed it myself over a couple of summers, saving a ton of money. Being in my 50s, I don't want to replace another roof in twenty years, which I would have to do with shingles! Plus, I get a discount on my insurance because the roof is fireproof and resistant to hail damage.

Clear skies and calm winds with fresh / deep snow has produced the coldest temps of the season over many parts of MN. No records by a long shot- but somewhat impressive in this very mild stretch and with no true Arctic Air involved (snow cover + long nights / clear skies has made it's own cold) --- Coldest I've seen is -24F in Crane Lake. Almost certain , lower elevations , historic cold spots (Embarrass, etc) are very near -30F this AM. Nothing to write home about for late DEC-- but something to build upon especially with more snow chances coming. This should set the stage for a cold to very cold New Years Holiday with some locations flirting with -35F to even -40F if wind and clouds cooperate. My hunch is not quite that cold due to wind/clouds - even after another few inches of snow. Expect a pullback to more warmer temps overall first week / 10 days of Jan followed by some "interesting " to "very interesting" winter weather for the dead of winter.

Locals from Finland Mn, told me the snowiest place in Mn is near Finland at Wolf Ridge.
It is the location of the Environmental Learning Center.

Tried to fix the looped quote.
We've had about half our average January rainfall in the last 2 days. That, on top of the wettest year on record for Dallas/Fort Worth. That includes the year it literally rained 40 days and 40 nights, I think 2014 or 2015. Unfortunately, we alternate between severe drought or "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, STOP RAINING!"
It's been great for the lakes!

North shore another dump:A winter storm system is headed for the Northland. It will spread
snow through the region from west to east this evening through early Monday afternoon. There will be widespread snowfall of at least 3 to 5 inches from central Minnesota to northwest Wisconsin, but areas of northeast Minnesota will get 6 to 8 inches or more.
The greatest snowfall is expected along the Minnesota North Shore with 10 to 18 inches.

Same here forecast fizzled out. We are at 33 degrees F. this morning also. We did get rain and everything is glare ice and schools closed. Tough walking in my driveway.

Having moved back to MN this summer after 17 years in NH, I’ve had my fill of ice and wet snow. The NWS forecast for Duluth last night should be printed on cardboard and the forecasters made to eat it.
Just kidding! But seriously, this was a major disappointment to look at this tableau this morning - note the outdoor temp:
