Well first off I have not died, but don't have access to a computer very often so that's why I haven't posted for several months now. I need some help form the good members on our board. Last fall while up in Ontario I got swept into a nasty sweeper and cracked the side of my Savage Deep Creek solo [it's the TexTreme layup], during the course of the week the crack opened into ai very slight crack in the outside, it's above waterline and about 3 inches long. I want to get it fixed this winter and was wondering who or where to take it. I guess I could send it back to Savage River buy the shipping bill would be really high. The thing is without any access to a computer I would be eternally gratefull if any one has any suggestions they could call me at 507-696-5401. Thanks everyone and have a good safe new year on the roads and on the water. FRED

You can do it yourself. Two pieces of fiber glass cloth, three if you want to go nuts. Fiberglass cloth is transparent when wetted with resin so the blemish is not obvious. One or two pieces inside the hull (second bigger than the first by 1" all the way around, the first about an inch bigger than the cut). On the outside I'd make the cloth just about 1/2" bigger than the tear). Rough the hull with coarse sandpaper. Wipe up dust with cloth dampened with acetone. Mix resin. Paint area to be patched with resin (use 3/4" disposable brush). Place cloth then wet with resin. Sand smooth when set. If you are really particular you can buff it.

Ouch! And Textreme no less, it's supposed to be stronger than regular carbon. The problem with these ultra light canoes is they are almost flimsy above the waterline. I poked 1 hole in a carbon Voyager, and put a 4" through and through crack in the same boat. Both above the waterline and both were done portaging ( no trails). But when you are old light weight is better than indestructible. I just love the looks of Textreme though. ( and you can play checkers on it in camp) Banksiana is right though, an easy fix. I keep chickening out on taking my SR Blackwater on the Pigeon River. It's so pretty!

You can probably get a good match for your textreme here:
Composite Envisions

It sounds like you need a pretty small patch, so maybe they can sell you a small scrap, rather then an entire yard. Better yet, get a piece of fabric from Savage River. Once you have the fabric and some epoxy, it should be fairly easy to apply the patch. I'm not an expert by any means, but I've laid-up a bit of fiberglass, kevlar and carbon fiber, and I've done a lot of work with epoxy. Judging by your number, you are in the same part of MN as me, so I'd be willing to help out if you need a hand. Good luck!

Just call Savage River and get a repair kit. The send everything you need and talk you through the repair. I damaged my Deep Creek about 4 years ago by while getting into canoe with a unseen sharp rock right underneth it. Heard it happen as soon as I sat and the canoe didn't give under my weight into the water. I repaired it myself and if I don't point it out to someone, they never even notice.

Thanks everyone for their replies, here and the members who called me. I think I'll get hold of Northwestern canoe and see if they will fix The Dark Lady for me. FRED
